I love this! What a great idea to make a quick mug cake in the microwave. Just brilliant!

Simone commented on Nov 13 11 at 3:38 am

You know how horrible using a microwave is? It turns all food into carcinogens not to mention changes the genetic structure of food. In turn turning your body into something it once wasn’t. Genetically engineered garbage. And when you put your little tikes in front of the microwave, along with yourself it takes all the vitamins and minerals out of your body. YUCK! It takes 10 minutes longer to cook in the oven. Quit being lazy and gross and research yourself. IGNORANCE IS THE WORST CAUSE OF SUFFERING!

Catherine commented on Nov 15 11 at 6:18 pm

@Catherine : The ideas you have about the dangers of a microwave are uncommon, but completely unfounded. I suggest you go to your local university and talk to any physics professor, who I’m sure would gladly explain to you why you have nothing to worry about when it comes to microwave ovens.

Before you toss your microwave oven on the recycling heap or start fashioning yourself an aluminium hat to protect your brain from Martian radio waves, you might want to double-check your science. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself the laughable victim of an urban legend.

Read this — http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/cookplastic.asp — and then, this — http://www.snopes.com/science/microwave/plants.asp. When used appropriately, microwave cooking is not only safe, but often preserves the nutirients in your food (unless, of course, you’re an habitual over-cooker!)

Now, back to the recipes: tried the Salted Caramel Chocolate Cake, the Nutella, and a couple of others. As a professional chef, I don’t count myself a fan of microwave cooking, for purely aesthetic reasons, however, it does have its time and place. Given a choice between those pricey boxed “instant” microwavable desserts and something quick and easy I’ve personally overseen and created, I’ll always choose the latter.

To the original poster(s) of these tasty simplicities, thank you! We have the kids in the kitchen even now, experimenting with their own variations. If anything delish comes of it, I’ll post our results. :-D

I work in an oncology lab, and my response was….wow.

Another wow was that, the mug cake really satiated my midnight craving for something sweet! and not much to clean up after in the morning ha

Sounds … interesting. Who would have ever thought of cooking in a mug however I bet it would be great as dessert for friends – especially girlfriends looking to get lost in chocolate.
Adore the idea of a fluffernutter.

Rhese recipes are great think I’ll be giving them a try! I remember doing cakes in the microwave all the time when I was little, in Christmas pudding tubs! This is perfect for my lazy post holiday day tomorrow :-)

Sarah commented on Nov 18 11 at 2:05 am

Wow is right… I have no response to that.

Can not wait to try this. Having a dinner party in a week or so and this will be a hit with the kids.

Michelle commented on Nov 22 11 at 1:47 pm

@Catherine Do you have ANY IDEA how a microwave works? Really? Microwaves produced by microwaves stimulate water molecules to move quickly, therefore creating heat and warming your food. ANY HEAT changes the molecular structure of food. You read a science book.

liz commented on Nov 27 11 at 9:28 pm

Wow! Seems ignorance REALLY is the worst cause of suffering. I LOVE little personal cakes that don’t call for heating up the oven, making a huge mess, or worst of all.. SHARING!! :) But when we all die from our microwave usage and therefor our mineral and vitamin depleted bodies start collapsing at her feet, Catherine can feel proud to say “I told you so” and go on about her life making her cakes in her oven because SHE was not being “lazy and gross”! Until then…. I’m going to power on! But thanks for the warning Catherine. :)

I love these! Such an awesome idea. I tried the nutella one and it was just amazing.

Elizabeth commented on Nov 29 11 at 3:45 pm

Where did you get the Nutella mug? I love it and would like buy one. Thanks.

As it says on Pinterest. 10 % of arguements are about a problem, 90 % are about the tone in which you use. You may reach many more people by being kinds with the words you choose or using a non-condisending tone rather than being insulting.

love this idea! cause sometimes you want something fast and easy and you only want enough to satisfy you and not have that whole box of brownies staring at you to eat it all! haha! microwave lady is a little scary!! i myself try not to use the microwave alot because processed food isn’t so great for you and i like to cook! but microwave lady got a little over reactive to the microwave…..maybe she had a bed experience with a microwave….who knows! haha!

I know I saw people selling stuff like this in the past. I thought it would make a great teacher gift for Christmas but I was wondering how to I make it without the egg and oil? Do I leave a note for instruction that they have to put it in themselves? Any ideas?

Tanya commented on Dec 09 11 at 10:54 am

@Catherine…thanks for the HUGE laugh I got tonight by reading your ignorant post. Unbelievably funny!!

And I look forward to trying these niffy recipes with my ‘tikes’ this weekend! Super easy with hardly any clean-up. SCORE!!

Kara commented on Dec 09 11 at 7:07 pm

I’ve heard the bad reports about microwaves, I have an experience with a microwave that is not good. However, it was a very old microwave from the ’80s. I had a Beta fish and moved it beside the old microwave in the kitchen. In a short time he had bent in 1/2. He was still alive, but completely bent in the shape of an “L”. He was a very old Beta, but I have to say I suspect it was the microwave that did it to him. We humanely put him down, and trashed the microwave and bought a new one.
Now, for the cakes, I can not wait to try these. They look so delicious and I love Nutella! YUM!!

I love this idea for “cup” cakes and think they would make great gifts for the holidays and simple desserts at the end of the day. I shared this with my group at http://www.facebook.com/TheCheapGourmet and am sure they will be thrilled to have this recipe. Thanks for sharing and Happy Holidays!

The Cheap Gourmet commented on Dec 17 11 at 11:54 am

I love this! Whenever I’m busy and need a dessert I love making mug cakes. I’ve only made a nutella one before though so I’m grateful for more recipes

These sound so fun! My husband hates cake, so this would be fun for me and the kiddos to do. We could probably all share one and be fulfilled and not have all the left overs and extra calories laying around :)

Kami commented on Jan 06 12 at 5:16 pm

Catherine literally made me snort with laughter…. which wasn’t good since I had a mouthful of the salted caramel mug cake from this site. I can wholeheartedly recommend these recipes if they all turn out like this one! I LOVE THIS CAKE! Its moist, without being gummy… really DID only take 5 min. I didn’t have skim milk for my recipe or all purpose flour, so I used vanilla rice milk and white whole wheat flour. Still turned out GREAT! Definitely trying the other recipes!

Looney Loocey commented on Jan 06 12 at 10:20 pm

I tried the chocolate chip cookie dough one and wasn’t impressed. It turned out tough and not sweet. What did I do wrong? Any suggestions?

valerie commented on Jan 10 12 at 5:06 pm

we only live once, right? I can’t wait to try those little microwavable mug cakes…if I die using a microwave then so be it, I will die happy!

Dawn commented on Jan 11 12 at 5:30 pm

@simone, we OBVIOUSLY know how TERRIBLE microwaving food is. I mean, McDonald’s microwaves food.. the horror!!!!!!! Seriously, is this where you’re pitching your battle flag? *pats your head* It’s okay, honey. Simmer down.

MJ commented on Jan 16 12 at 4:27 pm

Sorry, I meant @catherine. @Simone, carry on being fabulous, as always. (Love your shoes.)

MJ commented on Jan 16 12 at 4:29 pm

Thanks for the laughs Catherine…. I am completely enjoying my Carcinogen Cake while reading your phobic comments.

Vitamin Depleted Microwave User commented on Jan 28 12 at 4:25 pm

@Catherine…I have to wonder why you even looked at this recipe in the first place if you have such a low opinion of microwaves and those who use them. Actually, I am surprised you would even EAT cake since flour is processed food….also, hun, calling someone gross makes you sound so much like a grade-schooler that no one could possibly take you seriously (even if your point weren”t ridiculous). And don’t worry; my children and I generally don’t stare at our food circling in the microwave, so we ought to be just fine. :)

Thanks for these recipes! I’m looking forward to trying them out. I found a brownie recipe last night and it inspired me to find recipes like yours. :) Keep up the good work.

Mel commented on Feb 02 12 at 3:40 pm

I made this and it turned out AWESOME! It’s perfect for single servings :) I ran out of creamy peanut butter and used chunky instead and I think it’s even better now. Enjoy!
