9 Delicious Ideas for Caramel Apples
Caramel Apples are a tradition I started with my husband’s family. His mom taught me how to make them when I was about 16. It was the first time I had ever eaten a caramel apple, and I thought they were the best things ever. She made the whole process a real family event. All of us kids gathered in the kitchen to dip our own apples and then sprinkled whatever goodies we wanted on them. We used nuts most often and sometimes crumbled up candy bars.
The possibilities of caramel apple variations are only limited by the contents of your pantry. Chopped nuts, crumbled candy bars or crushed cookies make great crumb coatings. You can even dip them in chocolate after the caramel has hardened to make them extra decadent. Making caramel for your apples couldn’t be easier either. You can simply take little wrapped candy caramels, have your kids unwrap them all, and then place them in a double boiler to melt with a few tablespoons of milk or cream. After the caramel has melted, dip your apples. If you want to make a traditional homemade caramel sauce, Elise from Simply Recipes has a great recipe here. And for an even simpler honey caramel recipe, check out Heidi’s recipe over at 101 Cookbooks here.
And here is my super simple caramel apple sauce that uses caramel candies:
Ingredients
16 oz caramel squares
3 tablespoons milk
a double boiler
Lollipop sticks or sticks as shown above
6 apples
Optional Ingredients
melting chocolate
chopped nuts or candy bars
Instructions
1. Unwrap caramels and add to double boiler with milk. Boil water to melt caramels. Mix until smooth. Clean apples and insert lollipop sticks in them.
2. Dip apples in caramel and then in chopped nuts if desired.
3. If you want to add chocolate, melt chocolate according to package directions and drip melted chocolate over the tops of the apples with a spoon.
Makes 6 caramel apples.
