Better Than Starbucks: The Perfect Homemade Iced Chai Latte with a Special Twist!
Chai ice cubes and homemade vanilla simple syrup! Those, my friends, are my two secrets to whipping up a perfect better-than-Starbucks iced chai tea latte at home! I have been on a major, MAJOR, make-at-home iced chai kick lately which is why I am preaching this method from the rooftops. The tea ice cubes are key because they keep the drink cool but don’t dilute the flavor of the chai as they melt. For years I’ve read about people making coffee ice cubes for homemade iced coffee (genius!) and I realized that the same should go for chai. To make my iced chai at home I use Stash Double Spice Chai Tea from Target (cheap and good!), not the powdered or liquid concentrate. I find it tastes the best. I then make a cup of strong tea and freeze it in a regular ice cube tray. It is as simple as that. To lightly sweeten my chai I add a spoonful or two of vanilla simple syrup. I usually keep a jar of it in our fridge all summer long for chai and iced teas. I don’t like my chai overly sweet, a little bit of syrup goes a long way. So, before you go spend another five bucks at Starbucks on a small iced chai, make your own version at home. It so easy and so much more refreshing than anything you’ll find at the coffee shop!
Perfect Homemade Iced Chai
1 or 2 teaspoons homemade vanilla simple syrup
4 teabags for your favorite chai tea
1/4 cup Skim milk
1. Make the ice cubes in advance by brewing 1 cup of tea with two of the teabags. This keeps the flavor very strong. Freeze this tea in an ice cube tray.
2. Brew the remaining two teabags in two cups of hot water. Allow to steep for at least 5 minutes, then remove the bags and allow the tea to cool to room temperature. Or, chill the tea until ready to drink.
3. To assemble the chai, stir the 2 cups of chai with the milk in a tall glass. Stir in the vanilla simple syrup until you reach desired sweetness. Add 3 or 4 of the chai tea ice cubes to keep the drink cool.
