It’s camping season, which means cooking over an open fire. Which is something we love to do on the beach, with not much more than knife-sharpened sticks. There has to be some sport to it, right?

Besides marshmallows and s’mores, there are a lot of great things you can cook over a campfire. Some of the best things are breadsticks, made by wrapping dough around a stick and cooking it over an open fire until it’s cooked through and slightly charred on the outside. Serve them warm alongside chili or stew, or with jam and hot chocolate.

You could use any kind of dough for these breadsticks – grab a tube of breadstick dough if you must, or mix up a batch of biscuit dough (from scratch or with Bisquick – hey, you’re camping). If you want to get fancy, add garlic, herbs or grated cheese.

Campfire Breadsticks

2 cups flour
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup canola oil

In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. (You can do this ahead of time and bring it to the campground in a zip-lock baggie.) Add the milk and canola oil and stir by hand just until you have a soft dough.

Pat or roll the dough into a rectangle and cut into strips. Wrap the strips around the ends of clean sticks and cook over hot coals until golden and cooked through. Eat warm.

Here’s another great idea. We call them “Doughboys”. Grab a tube of cresent rolls and a debarked, green stick that has the same circumfrence as a quarter. Wrap the cresent roll around the stick without any gaps, being sure to cover the end of the stick. I start by covering the end of the stick, and then wrap upwards. Cook over the fire until golden brown and the doughboy slides off the stick easily – it takes a while! Be patient!! Fill with layers of whipped cream and jam. Campfire bliss!!

Here in the UK we call these Dampers and they’re a ‘must’ at (girl) Guide camp!, Delicious!
