Mrs. Obama Unveils USDA’s New MyPlate to Replace Food Pyramid
Our current food pyramid, which first appeared in 1992, will now be a thing of the past. Mrs. Obama, along with other government officials unveiled the new “MyPlate” design today (pictured above) at a news conference in Washington. This was one of Mrs. Obama’s keys to help fight the obesity epidemic by showing us visually how simple a healthy diet can be. The plate is divided into four sections: fruits, grains, vegetables and protein. A small circle off to the side is reserved for dairy.
The old food pyramid was widely criticized for being difficult to understand. This new plate guide is suppose to much simpler for people to understand the importance of eating lots of fruits and vegetables. The first phase of the new campaign associated with the MyPlate design will focus on the importance of fruits and vegetables. Later phases of the campaign will focus on not eating large portions and replacing water for sugary drinks.
This project cost about $2 million. The money covered a web site, related educational materials, and an educational campaign about the plate icon over the next year.

D.Rae Smith commented on Jun 02 11 at 3:49 pmI think that its a sudden thing, and that Mrs.Obama should be targeting not only obese, but people who need to gain weight such as certain adults or children with a diesese such as diabetics or people who are anerexic, or people who go on this diet that begin to notice a drop in blood sugar. Most people are not willing to go on diets such as this, because it doesn’t fit their habbits. In my oppinion, obese and underwight(ill) people need a small slot for sweets once a week (about 5 oz). To extend my concern, the ” Family Kitchen” or “MyPlate” should be looking at what kids/adults are lacking most; are they lacking protien, energy, nutrience, grain, or even lack of exersise and rest? In certain cases, I belive that it’s not by eating habbits that cause obesity, but bordum. When people eat, it’s usually when they are bored, not because they’re hungry. Some people do need to try to eat healthier,in that case the “MyPlate” will suit them best, on the other hand, there needs to be something within a home that can occupy their time. So, to put a long story short, there needs to be different food groups selected to certain hieght, wight, and age limits.
