Perfect Tomato Sauce with 5 Simple Ingredients
Tomato sauce can be made a surprisingly number of ways, but at the core of a good sauce are the five main ingredients: olive oil, tomatoes, onions, basil and salt. Of course, even that combination can vary when you are cooking, so who’s to say the five most essential ingredients are onion, tomatoes, garlic, salt and butter! Well, my favorite basic sauce calls the first combination and we love it to death. Sometimes I add a little spice for heat, and other times I add some oregano and parsley for an herbal punch. Any way you choose to make it is fine with me, because there is almost no wrong way it can be done. Here is my favorite tomato sauce that is made with just four ingredients. Hope you like it!
Four Ingredient Tomato Sauce
1 28 ounces can crushed tomatoes
1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
olive oil
3 or 4 basil leaves
kosher salt
In a large pot warm the oil over medium-high heat and add the onion. Stir for about ten minutes, or until the onion is softened. Then pour in the tomatoes, salt and basil and simmer over low heat for about 20 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened. Remove the basil leaves and serve!
