Deep Fried Strawberries Deep Fried Strawberries with Chocolate Dipping Sauce

I know what you may be thinking. It’s a little out of the ordinary BUT if you give this a try, I think you just might be pleasantly surprised. Strawberries are everywhere right now and I’m always looking for ways to use them. We’ve already shared a trio of beverage ideas using strawberries: STRAWBERRY MARGARITA GRANITA , STRAWBERRY AGUA FRESCA , and a  NUTELLA STRAWBERRY SMOOTHIE. When my friend mentioned to me that she had DEEP FRIED STRAWBERRIES for dessert while dining out the other night I knew immediately I HAD to make them and I’m so happy I did. I went with a more savory batter to compliment the sweet, sweet strawberries and was super pleased with the results. If you wanted to try a tempura batter I imagine that would be equally tasty, too.

We dipped ours in NUTELLA and the kids enjoyed theirs with a small bit of Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup. These were VERY large berries so one was plenty for everyone.

I also left the stems on making it easier to hold onto while battering.

Deep Fried Strawberries
What you’ll need:
batter:
1 1/2 cups whole milk
2 eggs – beaten
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup cornmeal

large strawberries
1/2 cup – 1 cup all purpose flour – enough  to dredge strawberries
vegetable oil – enough to fry
powdered sugar – to dust
dipping sauces:
Nutella
Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup

What to do:
1. Place enough vegetable oil into a deep sided frying pan {or deep frying machine} and heat to 375 degrees. I use a candy thermometer to monitor my oil temperature.

2. Into a large bowl add: milk, eggs, 1/4 cup vegetable oil. Whisk to combine. Set aside.

3. Into a separate bowl add: salt, sugar, 1 1/2 cups flour, cornmeal and baking powder. Whisk to combine. GRADUALLY add flour mixture to wet ingredients. Mix until well incorporated.

4. Into a shallow pan, add enough flour to dredge strawberries.  Mist strawberries with water. Dredge strawberries in flour and then into batter mixture.

5. CAREFULLY place battered strawberries into the hot oil. Do not crowd pan. Cook until golden. Turning {I find chopsticks work well} so it’s evenly browned on all sides. Transfer strawberries to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.

6. Transfer to serving plate and dust with powdered sugar. Serve with dipping sauces.

You’re a genius. I don’t even know how you did it, but it looks delicious! Gotta make these for a fun night with the girls :)

what a great idea!!

Wow! Just wow! Not healthy, but that looks incredible :)

Matthew "mmWine" Horbund commented on May 10 11 at 2:43 pm

Disgusting I want it.

Michael commented on May 12 11 at 7:58 pm

I seriously think this is not just disgusting idea, but pretty much the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard- includeing Deep Fried Beer.

Strawberries are one of the most nutritionally powerful foods available to the general population, and they really should never be messed with- just eaten whole raw and rinsed.

Please never do this.

look at america, deep fried pickles, deep fried twinkes, deep fried butter…now lets deep fry some healthy food. haha. ohh goodness.

claire commented on May 17 11 at 1:19 am

These look amazing! Going to try them ASAP. This makes a Southern girl do the happy dance.

oh relax. No one’s suggesting this should become a permanent part of your diet – its just something new and interesting (and delicious) to try. And while no match for a spinich salad, aren’t they a step up from corn dogs, deep fried twinkies or snickers, or god forbid sticks of deep fried butter.

melly commented on May 20 11 at 9:42 pm

You have to be kidding! This is how to ruin a great food in one easy lesson.

lindy commented on May 22 11 at 12:25 am

Are you proud of this? And then you guys wonder why you are a fat unhealthy nation..

Annie commented on May 22 11 at 8:59 am

I am changing my diet to exist solely on deep fried strawberries because I am a hambeast American.

Are you serious? Good lord.

Caitlin commented on May 23 11 at 5:46 pm

I love the differing opinions. Why anyone waste their time complaining when they could be doing something that would make them smile is beyond me.

I think this is a great idea ! Probably a once-off but it would be different and that always calls me.

that strawberry looks like a vagina

Jason Kroeger commented on May 24 11 at 1:16 am

THANK YOU!
When I was pregnant this was all I craved and everyone said it was disgusting and crazy.
Thank you for proving all of them wrong.

Kitty commented on May 25 11 at 7:38 pm

This look amazing! As for people bagging on this, calm down. It’s OK to be a little naughty with food sometimes. Nobody is saying a strawberry should forever be eaten fried.
I like it. It’s fun :]

Allie commented on May 26 11 at 1:16 am

This is to all the idiots who are freaking out about this idea. Nobody is saying go and fry every strawberry you ever eat. It is just a new suggestion to a common dessert, chocolate covered strawberries for those who live under a rock. You people should really learn to live life a little more. The anxiety you have from being overly cautious and a little too worried about this idea will cause your body more damage than having this dessert. Relax and enjoy something new and delicious!

Nurse commented on May 26 11 at 4:16 am

seriously people. Do we not have the freedom to eat whatever we want? Yes. So chill, its JUST A STRAWBERRY. Good lord, some of these comments.

Hoffenstein commented on May 26 11 at 7:17 pm

Haters gonna hate.
I love fresh strawberries raw, but I am also willing to try this to see how it tastes. I would much prefer to batter and deep fry strawberries as a dessert than have something else that’s 100x worse for you in sugar content.

K commented on Jun 03 11 at 9:20 pm

Calm down people. People will eat whatever they want for DESSERT. Desserts classically are bad for you. Anything can be made unhealthy. Stop acting like its the end of the world. Matter of fact, America isn’t even the fattest in the world, sadly 3rd place, but Germany is a close runner in 4th place.

Eat what you love, but don’t over do it. Balance your life, a little sweet isn’t bad. Live it up folks!

Nicole commented on Jun 03 11 at 11:59 pm

I had seen this idea before… It looks great! I do have one question tho… Were the strawberries that you used frozen or room temperature?

Thanks!

Amber commented on Jun 06 11 at 3:21 pm

@Amber – Thank you. The strawberries were fresh and were at room temperature.

bellalimento commented on Jun 06 11 at 8:43 pm

lol normally I read the comments on pages I stumble, and there is always some intense controversy going on, but rarely does that happen on a recipe page. Jesus, people love to argue. Chill out kids, it’s a strawberry and it isn’t worth an argument. It is not appalling or life altering in anyway. Dumpster babies are, strawberries aren’t.

goodness commented on Jun 12 11 at 2:41 am

I love strawerries. Plain, lightly dusted with fine sugar, DIPPED iN CHOCOLATE. And now this interesting little delicacy. Deep frying this beautiful, powerful little fruit does seem a horrible thing to do; however, the point of dessert is to have no point other than pure delight. And this, is pure delight. It looks pretty and I’m sure it tastes as decadent as it looks. Yes, it’s unhealthy. That’s why it’s dessert and a treat. Make them, enjoy them but don’t eat an entire field of them. Americans being ham-fisted monuments to obesity is about portion sizes and bad decisions. Now, be quiet and enjoy!

smitthenKitten commented on Jun 13 11 at 2:18 pm

I am a strawberry, and i take great offense to this recipe! How would you like someone to boil you in oil!

Straw Berry commented on Jun 21 11 at 7:36 am

Seriously, to those who are reacting negatively…. get a life! Nobody is forcing you to eat deep-fried strawberries. This is just an option to have – something that’s out of the ordinary — and to be enjoyed every once in a while!

I always believe that self-control, ie. PORTION is the key to eating healthy. I allow myself to indulge once in a while, but keep it small. If you eat one or two of these yummy treats, I’m sure you’d be ok… but if you eat a whole pound of it, now that’s your problem!

Jescel commented on Aug 10 11 at 12:37 pm

I looked at these and wondered… what if you dipped the strawberries in Nutella before dredging in flour and batter? Create a self-contained bite of heaven, dusted with powdered sugar. I’ll have to give them a try!

Carla commented on Jan 08 12 at 7:45 am

I had these when I was a kid at Hilton Head. They are FANTASTIC. I’m so excited to find a recipe. Thank you so much!! :)
