We here at Babble have gone cuckoo for Cakes-in-a-Jar. There have been so many remarkable creations of the sort that we’ve even compiled a slideshow showing off some of our hottest recipes.  It’s a great list, a really delicious compilation of today’s hottest food trend. But, one thing that list doesn’t have is a this recipe for a basic, soft and moist, Golden Butter cake. The recipe takes abotu 1 minute and thirty seconds to microwave (and yes, it actually TASTES delicious even via microwave) then we shave time off the icing of the cake by simply topping it with a heaping dollop of Nutella. Simple perfection ready in minutes. That’s what this cake is.

  • 1 box yellow cake mix, prepared according to package directions
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Butter & Nut Flavoring (optional)
  • Lots of  Nutella
  • 3 pint-sized canning jars

Thoroughly wash and dry the inside of each canning jar. Spray the inside of each jar thoroughly with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

Stir the Vanilla Butter and Nut Flavoring into the cake mix. Spoon about 1 cup of cake batter into each jar. Cook one jar at a time in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, or until the cake is cooked through. Allow jars to cool slightly, then scoop the top half of cake from the jar. Spoon a tablespoon or so of Nutella into the center of the jar, replace the top half of the cake back in the jar then top the warm cake with another layer of Nutella.

Serve immediately or cover with a lid and store in the fridge or pop into the mail & surprise someone you love! Cakes should stay fresh in the fridge for up to 5 days, and can be mailed so long as they are topped with a canning jar lid and arrive at their final destination within 3 days.

I’ve been wanting to try the cake in a jar and this one speaks to me because,
1: It’s easy
2: I have that extract and have never even opened it, and
3: I LOVE nutella!
How fun!!!

i am wondering if american people know how to make a sponge cake at all? whenever i see a cake recipe which turns out to be american it always seems to involve a packet of cake mix and more often than not a packet of frosting. barely a recipe at all really, more like instruction to go out and buy something, bring it home and use it. maybe if americans knew how super easy it is to make a cake from scratch they wouldnt need to eat all this processed crap.

I totally agree. It takes an extra 5 minutes to make from scratch and tastes 100% better. I’m always amazed when people ask what mix I used!

Hey Confused and Toni- this recipe is great for people like me (college kids) because we just don’t have sugar/vanilla/flour/etc. laying around the dorm. We probably don’t need to be eating cakes out of jars, either, but a box mix is great when we need a treat! :)
