Fat Tuesday Best of the Best: Paczki and Pancakes
Today is Fat Tuesday, a day that signifies the coming Lent which was traditionally observed by fasting and self denial. Many cultures take this opportunity to live it up one last time before the season sets in. The most famous festivals being Carnival and Mardi Gras. Many societies within Latin America and the Caribbean traditionally eat pancakes or other pastries like paczki, which is a jelly-filled donut, made with sugar, eggs and fat (hence the name “Fat Tuesday”). While many of the customs involving denial have faded, the celebratory nature of this day has increased in popularity over time.
