Dr. Seuss’s Birthday: Butter Battle Butters
Dr. Seuss’ birthday is today! Let’s celebrate the rhyming master with a bit of fun in the kitchen. My kids have been enjoying all of our Dr. Seuss activities and games this week, and my kindergartner ran out the door this morning dressed in red and white, his backpack stuffed with several books from our Dr. Seuss collection and his lunchbox filled with treats for the classroom celebration this afternoon.
He has recently been requesting that we read him The Butter Battle Book by Dr. Seuss over and over. Not one that people often think of first, often overshadowed by The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham, The Butter Battle Book is the story of the arms race in the ’50s. As the Yooks and the Nooks build bigger and bigger weapons to try to out do the other all over deciding which is better: eating your bread butter side up or butter side down.
We had our own butter battle with compound butters during dinner last night. We made two of our favorites and had the kids choose which was the best. Lots of love went to the blue cheese, and then the thyme started to pull ahead. In the end, it was a tie, kind of like the Dr. Seuss rhyme.
Blue Cheese and Rosemary Compound Butter

3 tablespoons blue cheese crumbles
2 teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary
Mix all ingredients together until incorporated. Refrigerate until ready to use. Spread on your favorite breads or melt over steak.
Lemon and Thyme Compound Butter

zest from one lemon
2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves
Mix all ingredients together until incorporated. Refrigerate until ready to use. Spread on bread, melt over steak, top off vegetables.
