Power Food Friday: Yogurt

yogurt 200x300 Power Food Friday: YogurtYogurt, a kind of food that’s been eaten for over five thousand years, is a power food with a wealth of health benefits. Besides the obvious calcium in dairy-based yogurts, it also contains phosphorus, riboflavin, and iodine.

But perhaps the most beneficial aspect of yogurt is the live bacterial cultures. These various strains of bacteria—which may include L. acidophilus, Streptococcus thermophilus, and others—are helpful for the immune system, digestive tract, and can even help prevent yeast infections.

Since so many kinds of yogurts contain added sugar, artificial sweeteners, colors or flavors, try to purchase plain yogurt, and add fruit and honey at home, or there are several brands available at health food stores which only add natural sweeteners and flavors, and are equally delicious as some of the regular grocery store varieties.

To make a yogurt parfait like the one pictured, layer plain yogurt with honey, granola, and sectioned oranges.

A recipe for the vanilla almond granola is on my blog, sophistimom.com.
