A New Zodiac Sign: What Ophiuchus and Other Signs Say About You
Movements in the earth’s axis over thousands of years have spurred some astronomers to question the accuracy of our zodiac system, and bring to light a previously little known sign: Ophiuchus (oh-FEE-uh-kuss). If you were born between Nov. 29 and Dec. 17, you could be considered Ophiuchus. Apparently previously calculated astrological positions have required some new millennium readjustment. New attention to the shift has supposedly caused many of us to question our signs and switch teams, and for those of us who believe in astrology, it could trigger a bit of an identity crisis.
I must say, I’m not happy about not being a Scorpio. According to today’s wildly publicized alternative zodiac chart (below), I’m now on the cusp of Virgo and Libra.
According to Georgia Nicols, the Scorpio me must beware of financial matters today. The Libra me needs to not bite off more than she can chew. Which leads me to wonder: if our astrological signs have so much to do with our decision-making processes, what impact do they have on determining what’s for dinner?
If you haven’t seen it, here’s the alternative zodiac chart, with 13 signs:
Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11
Pisces: March 11-April 18
Aries: April 18-May 13
Taurus: May 13-June 21
Gemini: June 21-July 20
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29-Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20
According to TIME Magazine, the constellation Ophiuchus represents a man wrestling a serpent, dividing the snake’s body in two parts. Ophiuchus is considered a healer of men and a doctor of medicine or science who seeks higher education and enlightenment. You can get to know your new sign better here.
If you’re one who believes in astrology, this is what your sign might have to say about what’s for dinner.
Capricorn: The practical and prudent Capricorn might doctor up a can of beans, making three-bean vegetarian chili to stash away for emergency meals later on.
Aquarius: Original and inventive, an Aquarius might experiment with French cooking, and make cod en papillote (fish baked in parchment).
Pisces: Compassionate and kind, a Pisces might forego making dinner to bake a batch of chocolate peanut butter bars for a friend in need.
Aries: Aries are said to be adventurous and energetic – you might experiment with making ice cream from scratch, using salt, ice and a tin can.
Taurus: Patient, reliable and warm hearted, a Taurus is likely to make a homey beef stew in the slow cooker.
Gemini: Adaptable and versatile, an easy one-wok stir-fry would be right up your alley if you’re a Gemini.
Cancer: Imaginative, creative and intuitive, a Cancer cook might experiment with a Quinoa, Apple & Goji Berry Salad with Honey-Curry Vinaigrette
Leo: A broad-minded and creative Leo might branch out with homemade huevos rancheros for dinner.
Virgo: Practical and diligent, a Virgo might be tempted to learn some time-saving tips and techniques to make mealtime prep more efficient.
Libra: The romantic Libra might make a batch of two-bite raspberry cheesecake tarts for dessert, whether it’s close to Valentine’s Day or not.
Scorpio: Emotional and passionate, a Scorpio is likely to mix up an easy batch of chocolate Nutella pudding, and eat it before dinner makes it to the table.
Ophiuchus: A healer, you might serve a bowl of steaming chicken or turkey soup.
Sagittarius: The good-humored Sagittarius is likely to have some fun with their food.

KSL commented on Jan 13 11 at 6:24 pmI really dislike this, I’ve always been a pisces and how could they change it? Plus now the scorpio have only a couple of days and everywhere that uses horoscopes are going to have to change the whole horoscope thing.
GB commented on Jan 13 11 at 6:39 pmI’m still a Scorpio. This means nothing to me.
Rachel b commented on Jan 13 11 at 6:41 pmI think it’s stupid that they added a sign. One sign is only for 7 days what that dumb stuff. I’ve been a tarus for 27 years. Now they gonna try and tell me that I’m an Aries get the hell outta here. Always was and always will be a tarus. So who ever changed this is an idiot. And they really need to get a life.
im like erica b. i have always been aries but since my man is pcies i can live with my new sign. Gloria M. commented on Jan 13 11 at 6:41 pmwho is ophiuchus also where did they come from.

L commented on Jan 13 11 at 6:53 pmThis is BS, I am staying a Cancer.
C. J. Frank commented on Jan 13 11 at 6:58 pmWhy would the astrological signs change? I was born a Virgo, but now I’m a LEO? I truly take offense to whoever changed the signs around. I really truly do.
Reese H commented on Jan 13 11 at 6:58 pmaah, this puts me at the cusp of scorpio and libra instead of the cusp of scorpio and sag, and the original is faaaaar more accurate.
Darlene commented on Jan 13 11 at 6:59 pmI think this sucks ! I was born a Taurus and I will die a Taurus.
Douglas commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:01 pmi think this is bull…jus because there is a new one dont mean that everyone needs to change… just skip it over thats all…why change it…i knw i will always call myself a Scorpio no matter what
prisma commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:01 pmthis is rubbish. there could not be thirteen astrological sign’s cause therefore there would be 13 months. that would change everything. we wouldnt be in the year 2011. these people cannot “add” to what has been for centuries before there time. -_- this actually angers me. the twelve ages cannot be thirteen you can even see that in the bible. and if you dont believe in the whole bible story then go scientific the years would be all different and longer it would change day light saving’s time and other things people dont look upon. Its complete RUBBISH! again. you cannot add to what has been for centuries.

Michelle commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:05 pmI can be either an Aquarius OR a Capricorn???? Talk about identity crisis!! I have always been an Aquarius, I will stay an Aquarius.
Dusty commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:08 pmI am NOT a leo. I was born a VIRGO!
Chauntale commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:12 pmNO I refuse to be an Aquarius I’ve always been a Pisces! Ophiuchus can stay where it was at. HMPH
THIS IS JUST UGH commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:12 pmive always been proud to be a leo; whatsmore, 13 signs are just.. weird. its supposed to be a dozen! if they really accept ophiuchus then -.-
Mo commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:13 pmAnybody on drugs looking up at the stars can see what they wanna see.

Randy commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:13 pmwhat are you if you’re birthday is Feb. 16th ??? am i 2??? thats f ed up
Kelly Colleen Torres commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:15 pmOf course you are happy about it! Who doesn’t want to be a Libra? Especially with all the Kharma around Scorpios. But I protest! I AM A LIBRA! You cannot just decide today that I’m a Virgo. I call BS on all of this!
C C Smith commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:16 pmHa…..this cracks me up ! Just when I thought I had it all figured out and now this happens ! And just how does one pronounce Ophiuchus….O/feuck/us ?
Oh feuck me !
Michelle M commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:20 pmI am a classic Virgo. I act nothing like a Leo. Unless the description of a Leo now sounds like a Virg, I’m not buying it.
maribel commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:21 pmI have been an aquarius all my life im 20 I ha e studied astrology since I wa 14. Now they want to come up w ophi … n change me into a capricorn. That is complete b.s. what are we going to do now? I am raged. I am angy w disbelieve. Im comfortable w changes but not of zodiac signs bullshit.
Matt commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:25 pmThat sure is stupid, I was born a scorpio, and now i am not. Well scorpio has always portrayed me very well. A Libra does not.
Brittany commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:26 pmErica, im definately on your side i mean what the fuck is this shit about changing signs? Im a scorpio and i love my sign! i was born with scorpio as my sign and i will die as scorpio as my sign.why are you goin gto change what has done so well for so long. Im sorry but i will NEVER ACCEPT THE NEW ZODIAC!!!!!
Stephanie commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:26 pmI’m not into astrology, but I’ve always been able to identify with my “cancer” sign. Now they are saying the new sign for my birthday is Gemini. However, if you read any of them closely, they do say, “For those BORN UNDER this sign”. Which leads me to believe that the earth’s shift has no effect on the sign I was born under. This only refers to those who have not been born yet. So I am and always will be…a cancer!
That’s MY take! =)
Jupiter commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:28 pmI’ve been a Pisces and now I’m Aquarius? I don’t think I “fit” that sign as much as I fit Pisces. I also wonder why all signs are approximately a month long while poor Scorpio only gets a week?
Fanci W. commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:28 pmHell no. I’ve been a Pisces inside and out since the day I was born. Every bit of me screams it out. I’ll be damned if I’m an Aquarius. They seriously need to re check themselves.
J.M.T De Losfingremos commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:28 pmHow about some bull shit for dinner…?
Harmony4us commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:35 pmThis is BULL, the earth has shifted before. I’m a sagitarius period the end!!!!!!!!
Evie M commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:44 pmi was an aries…now im a pisces? thats so wierd..
Mellie commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:45 pmIm still a Scorpio, and Pluto is still a planet period.
Ann commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:46 pmI also was a Sagittarius, and I don’t know how to even say Ophiuchus!!
rachel commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:47 pmOh it’s just those damn scientists in Minnesota… who really cares what Minnesotians have to say anyway!
allie commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:47 pmI think this should only pretain to people born in 2011 and p bc I totally fit the pisces symbol and I have the tattoo.
Zakiyyah Thomas commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:56 pmI’ma Gemini (MAY 21,) I’ve just embraced the idea that I was on the cusp of being a Taurus and a Gemini (two headed bull) I shall not embrace the idea that I am a Taurus and only a Taurus. I am and always will a Gemini on the cusp of being a Taurus and that’s that . .
rebekah commented on Jan 13 11 at 7:57 pmNope! Not gonna fly. Sorry.

Cam H. commented on Jan 13 11 at 8:08 pmI take pride in being a Libra, and now I’m suppose to be a Virgo! Not that there isn’t anything wrong with it, but I loved my Libra-esque! I won’t accept this…this…Ophiuchus until they logically point out the reason for it to be a zodiac sign. Until then, I am a Libra!
Raj commented on Jan 13 11 at 8:16 pmlol Erica B.
Like the author…I’m extremely angry about losing my Scorpio identity too. Virgo is just weak sauce. I think this shows that the whole zodiac thing is BS.
Simon commented on Jan 13 11 at 9:41 pmThe whole notion of Ophiuchus and the more accurate modern astrology system is nothing new. I remember reading about it in the UK tabloids like… 10-15 years ago.
It was big news for a week or so. But everyone soon forgot about it. Nothing is actually going to change.
haylee commented on Jan 13 11 at 9:42 pmnot liking this, i’ve always been a pisces and now im an aquarius?!? change it back.
Aminata commented on Jan 13 11 at 9:52 pmI always knew I was a Pisces! I never felt like an Aries!
Kenna commented on Jan 13 11 at 9:54 pmHonestly, I like the change. I knew I couldn’t be a Capricorn. Sagittarius is so me.
Vivacity commented on Jan 13 11 at 10:04 pmWe still are the signs we are, because we were born under that sign, however a newborn child born on the day of your birthday, will not be the same sign as whatever sign was on your birthday. Simple; you were born 1/13/90 (Capricorn) but baby is born today 1/13/11 (Sagittarius)
Ralph p commented on Jan 13 11 at 10:11 pmThis is probably the dumbest thingbive ever heard of in my life. Get a friggin clue. No one should change anything.

lilly commented on Jan 13 11 at 10:12 pmactually, in the ancient times, ophiuchus was actually the real thirteenth horoscope. but since they thought that thirteen was an unlucky number, they just kicked him out of the list. now that the earth has just suddenly rotated or something, they added him back in. he is the only member of the horoscope table who was actually a real person; Joseph, for you Christians. if you’re not Christian, then he’s Imhotep, an Ancient Egyptian King.
i also heard that if you mix scorpio and sagittarius then it’d pretty much add up to him…
MANDI SWEENY commented on Jan 13 11 at 10:19 pmI AM NOT HAPPY! I LOVED BEING A SAGITTARIUS! NOW I’M A OPHIUCHUS? WTF!!!!!!!! WHY DO PEOPLE NEED TO CHANGE THINGS? IF IT’S NOT BROKEN DON’T FIX IT. WE WERE ALL HAPPY WITH WHAT WE HAD!
Sarah commented on Jan 14 11 at 12:35 amI am really happy that they finally added my true sign to the chart. As a person who enjoys reading and learning about the zodiac, it has always been quite annoying that I never fit the description of a Sagittarius. I always wondered why it was so far off from who I am. I don’t take the zodiac extremely serious, but when I learned about Ophiuchus about two years ago, I felt so relieved to find that I match that description very well. I know that many others are very unhappy with the change, but I for one, am very glad it has finally happened. I feel like my place in the universe has finally been cemented….in some manner at least.
=)
StarQueen commented on Jan 14 11 at 11:03 amSo exactly when did the earth hit the “tipping point”? Do people born before a certain year remain under the old system? (Not that I’m changing–been a Cancer too long. And the debate about what to do with your old tatoo is interesting.)
William M commented on Jan 14 11 at 4:34 pmWhat the hell are they dong?!. I don’t like this I was born on September 5 1993. I am supposed to be a Virgo Male, and I don’t want to be a Leo Male. If they do this I will not, and I will not accept myself as a Leo Male. In fact I have more traits in Virgo then Leo. I am a critic, a realist/perfectionist, can be neat to a fault, and I have sympathy to other people. I can’t compare myself to any damn Leo I know.
