hoppin john recipe 300x209 Hoppin John Recipe: Get Your Black Eyed Peas for a Lucky New YearHoppin’ John is a traditional Southern dish made of black-eyed peas, rice. and pork and is a perfect meal for New Year’s Day. Why? Well, black-eyed peas are often eaten on New Year’s Day to bring prosperity and good fortune and luck in the coming year. The tradition is said to date back to the Civil War, when black-eyed peas were a major food source for the Confederate Army.

Amy from She Wears Many Hats has your New Year’s luck covered today with a traditional Hoppin’ John recipe handed down from her Nana, which makes it the best type of recipe; those that are handed down and perfected over the years often are.

As Amy tells us, “Each dish is symbolic: the pork represents progress in the new year; the collards, being green like money, prosperity; and the Hoppin’ John, all-around good luck.” Serve this dish with a slice of cornbread to symbolize gold, and if you’re suspicious, you may want to ensure you eat 365 black-eyed peas for god luck each and every day of the year.
