Dipped Pretzel Rods 300x201 Cooking with Toddlers: Chocolate Dipped Pretzel RodsWe at The Family Kitchen love the idea of bringing kids into the kitchen to help with cooking and food preparation. When we say kids this usually means the age three and older set, an age when kids are coordinated enough to pour measuring cups and stir carefully. Cooking with toddlers can be a little trickier. Their movements are less delicate and they don’t fully understand the function of all kitchen equipment. When my daughter was just a toddler we made dipped pretzel rods together. I would melt the chocolate in a shallow bowl and all she had to do was dip the rod in the melted chocolate, then dip it into sprinkles immediately following. It was simple, straightforward and fun. Plus, they made a nice afternoon treat when they were chilled. I would often pop them in the diaper bag before heading off to the playground. Here is how to make pretzel rods with your toddlers:

Chocolate Dipped Pretzel Rods

1 bag pretzel rods

1 bag (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips

Sprinkles of choice* (nuts, mini-chocolate chips or crushed candies would work well, too)

1. Melt chocolate chips in the microwave until smooth and glossy. Transfer hot mixture to a wide, shallow bowl for dipping. Place the bowl of sprinkles right next to the chocolate.

2. Help the toddler grip the large pretzel rod and dip it in the chocolate. Then have him immediately dip the pretzel in the sprinkles.

3. Line up the freshly dipped pretzels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Chill the rods in the refrigerator for an hour or until chocolate is hardened.

Great idea for my cooking with the kindergarten kids – they can do pretty difficult things, but that would be a great break for the teacher – me!
