All Natural Air Freshener

Alright, I just made this and now I feel merry and bright. The smell of the cinnamon and orange peel simmering on the stove at dinnertime just helps me de-stress, and more ready to welcome the holidays.

This little trick I do, of filling a saucepan with fragrant odds and ends at the holidays, is something I’ve been doing for over ten years. Once oranges are in season, and I am buying them a lot, my house almost always smells like a chapter in A Christmas Carol.

It costs next to nothing, and is so much better than any store-bought air freshener. Not only is it free of chemicals (that tend to give me a mild migraine), but it is made of things you are probably already eating and cooking with.

All-Natural Holiday Air Freshener

orange slices or orange peels (pretty ones not necessary)
spices, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves (whole or ground)
cranberries or juniper berries, optional

Fill a small saucepan halfway with water. Add in peels, spices, and berries, bring to a boil over medium heat, reduce heat to very low and allow to simmer. Pay very close attention, refilling with water as necessary. Never leave unattended! Discard after two days.

LOVE IT. Husband gets headaches from ALL air freshner, so this will be perfect to make the house smell yummy.

Mo–those are cinnamon sticks. Sometimes they’re hard to find, so ground cinnamon works well, too.

My mom used to do this all the time and it’s my favorite reminder that Fall is here :) Cranberries are a great addition!
