Nationwide Recall due to Glass Shards in Frozen Vegetables

Veggie1 300x258 Nationwide Recall due to Glass Shards in Frozen Vegetables Like glass much? How about the potential for glass fragments in your frozen veggies? Consumers of frozen vegetables are on high alert this week after Pictsweet brands issued a recall on October 15 for several of their frozen products. According to the company, there is a possibility that glass fragments may be found in four of their packaged, frozen vegetable products. All four of the products are distributed nationwide through Walmart and Kroger stores.  While there have been no reported cases of sickness or damage from tainted products, Pictsweet recommends that anyone who has purchased frozen veggies containing green peas affected by the recall avoid consuming them and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.  A list of recalled products, UPC codes, and production codes, is included after the jump.

Multiple Food Recalls This Year

It’s been a busy year for product recalls. This is the third food product recall issued by Walmart since July. Previously, there was concern over listeria contamination in deli meats sold by Walmart stores, and frozen chicken nuggets were also recalled late in the summer due to the potential for small bits of plastic in their frozen chicken nuggets. A nationwide egg recall affected most American homes, and grocery stores across the nation when millions of eggs were recalled due to a potential salmonella infestation.

With all these recalls affecting the American food supply, it leaves parents wondering, is our food safe?  It seems the answer, as of late, is that even the most stringent company guidelines leave room for machinery and human error.  As consumers, we much vigilantly and literally put our money where our mouth is, offering more of our fund to fresh, local produce that has been grown by a trusted farmer who stakes a personal investement in his harvest and product.   With the recall in effect,  now is a great time to make the extra effort to search out fresh, organic, seasonal produce.  

Keeping that goal in mind, you won’t want to miss a few of Babble’s best kid-friendly veggie recipes.  With concern over our food sources at a current high, there’s no need to push the panic buttons.  A little bit of caution, a lot of careful shopping, and a few fantastic recipes are a great way to start feeding your family better, more healthful foods.

Ouch, oh that was glass in my vegetables; I thought I broke a tooth!

Actually, incidence of food borne contamination is increasing more than ever. Mainly due to lack of oversight and inspections, the USDA and FDA are way under staffed and cannot inspect food preparation facilities often enough.
Expect to see more stories like this being played out more often, which is why we all need to go back to local, sustainable, and grow your own.
