Have Your Kids Go Gourmet: Ham and Apple Grilled Cheese
Well, they won’t go completely gourmet, but this is a start. Adding apple to a ham and cheese grilled sandwich will expose them to new—and for some kids, rather daring—flavor combinations. And since all three flavors are familiar to kids already, they may just hop on board.
I served open face sandwiches just like this to one of my kids and his friend as an after school snack last year, and they couldn’t say enough about it. They kept asking me to take pictures of them for my blog of them devouring them.
Adults will love these, too. I love the way the sweet and juicy tartness of the apple complements the ham and cuts through the sharpness of the Swiss cheese. You can try a variation by using pears, with caramelized onions and Gruyere.
Ham and Apple Grilled Cheese Sandwich
butter
2 slices of your favorite sandwich bread
2 pieces thinly sliced Swiss cheese
2 pieces of thinly sliced deli ham
2 very thinly sliced pieces of apple, such as Granny Smith, Jonathan, or MacIntosh
Butter the bread, and place the first piece, butter side down, on a large skillet set over medium low heat. Put one piece of cheese down, followed by the ham, the apple slices, and the other slice of cheese. Top with bread. Cook slowly to allow the cheese to melt and the butter to turn golden brown.
