A Shrimp Basket Before Dying
Even though I may be the only person you know who has risked her guts to try the KFC Double Down, I am usually a healthy eater. Most often indulging myself involves nothing more than a baked potato. That said, if I got to pick my dying meal the thing I’d probably go for is a shrimp basket. It all started when I pregnant with my second child and craved fried shrimp (and root beer floats) like it was nobody’s business. It’s primal: As a child I loved fried shrimp and ordered it a lot when my family went out to dinner. My favorite shrimp basket in the world is served at a tiny dive restaurant, the back of a bodega really, along the Gulf Coast of Florida called Seagrove Village Market.
The website Dead Man Eating catalogs the final meals of death row inmates. If you could pick your last meal, what would it be?

Dara commented on Sep 02 10 at 9:58 amA half-plain, half-pepperoni pizza from Patsys in New York with their famous insalata mista topped off with a bottle of the finest red wine, which for me, is anything above my usual $2 Trader Joe’s blend.
The Jeanmeister commented on Sep 02 10 at 10:11 amA gigantic mound of Chef Payard’s choux puffs. I could probably just eat myself to death and save the state the trouble!
Kelsey/TheNaptimeChef commented on Sep 02 10 at 11:33 amThis is such an interesting post! I have a hard time narrowing down the field, but it would involve gnocchi as a starter and profiteroles for desserts
Brooke McLay commented on Sep 02 10 at 11:58 amOh my gosh. THE JEANMEISTER’s comment has me CRACKING up over here! Classic!
I’ve thought about it all morning, and I can’t decide! Too many delicious foods! I think, however, that I’d be willing to trust my meal to the clever chef’s at Colorado Springs THE MARGARITA AT PINE CREEK. Lurve that place, with their fresh, seasonal meals, like I love my own children.
JulieVR commented on Sep 02 10 at 12:42 pmHmmmm.. not sure I could choose one favorite meal. It would most certainly involve cheese. And ice cream. And my grandma’s butter tarts.
Heidi commented on Sep 02 10 at 1:17 pmA place called Tyler’s makes THE best bleucheese and bacon burger with garlic fries. That plus a big ass creme brulee which I might eat first!
BonnieV commented on Sep 02 10 at 1:18 pmAt the risk of going all Molly Ringwald in The Breakfast Club, I have to say sushi. And it has to be form Ten-Ichi in San Francisco. I ate there last night and the fish was sublime–and that would be a pretty good state of mind to go out on.
Chris commented on Sep 02 10 at 2:27 pmAll the food would be cooked outside, excepting the dessert. The meal would take most of the day.
Amuse-gueule: Scuppernongs
First: Sneads Ferry oysters, roasted, served alongside biscuits.
Second: The ribs picked off of a whole hog just after it’s turned so that the skin-side is down.
Third: Lard-fried catfish, coleslaw, and hushpuppies.
Fourth: Barbecue, picked off the grill. Butter beans, collard greens, cornbread.
Fifth: My grandmother’s 14-layer chocolate cake
(All this would be washed down with copiously rude amounts of Guinness.)
Sarah commented on Sep 02 10 at 2:35 pmIn Australia, dinner at Sean’s Panaroma. In New York, The Standard.
RE - RecycledFrockery commented on Sep 03 10 at 4:19 amooo Chris, count me in for the Guinness, to watch you float away in bliss. for me it would have to be my godmothers German Chocolate Cake and Dot and Ettas Jumbo Batter Fried Shrimp with some fresh boiled sweet corn and butter; a side of collard greens with smoked turkey ham dressed with red wine vinegar, freshly chopped Tomato, Vidalia Onion and Cayenne Pepper relish; A portion of my 4 cheese mac and cheese and of course my own home made garlic rolls. ooooo did I forget Fresh Ginger Lemon/Lime Ade.
after that anybody would be done. really done.
ccampion commented on Sep 03 10 at 10:08 amso many things…this is so difficult to answer! I find it interesting that so many of the fantasy responses on the website from say they want their last meals to be items from a chain restaurant or fast food—cheesy bread from Little Caesar’s!? what is that?. If I could go with meals from specific places than it would have to be:
a big bowl of ramen and pork sticky buns from Ippudo in NYC
or guacamole and brisket tacos from Barrio Chica in NYC
enchiladas and a very large margarita on the rocks (this can actually be attached to all entrees) from some place I went in Austin that I can remember the name
or the fried eggplant pizza from Star Tavern in Orange, NJ
or a double-double burger animal style from In and Out burger
or oysters and champagne at Brasserie Lipp in Paris
or steak with mustard cognac sauce and frites from Chez George in Paris
apple turnovers from Poilaine in Paris
and really, really good friend chicken from whomever makes the best fried chicken ever.
If I had to make my own meal it would be a caesar salad, roast chicken on a bed of roasted sweet potatoes with lots of garlic and lemon, and a giant ice cream sundae.
Tracy commented on Sep 08 10 at 12:32 amMushrooms stuffed with blue cheese, French onion soup, watercress and grapefruit salad, lemon sorbet as a palate cleanser, veal Oscar – milk fed veal pounded thin, topped with avocado, crab, and hollandaise sauce, roasted asparagus, and for dessert chocolate decadence with a melange of fresh berries.
Amos commented on Sep 20 10 at 5:56 pmFirst a few armadillo eggs from Buzzard Billy’s in Lincoln, NE. They are balls of chicken wrapped in bacon with a piece of a jalapeno inside. Then chicken parmigiana and margarita pizza (tomato sauce, mozzarella, tomato, basil). Finally, an extremely large creme brulee with vanilla or brown sugar on top and a large dark chocolate mousse cup. To drink, extra chocolate chocolate milk.
