The Great Cherry Giveaway Contest
We’re giving away the season’s last two jars of homemade farmer’s market specialty red wine and caramel preserved cherries to make your summer last just a little bit longer.
These are Carrboro, North Carolina-based food artisan April McGreger’s prized sour cherries, which are preserved in gorgeous authentic old-fashioned jars, and they are astonishingly delicious. Use them to top ice cream, pancakes, angel food cake…or eat them straight from a spoon. They are the very last vestiges of summer’s bounty. We’re giving you a chance to win them now.
1. To enter, simply tell me in the “comments” section (below): Now that fall is almost here, what summer food or dish will you miss most and why?
2. Tweet about this contest and come back and let me know you have!
Enter to win summer’s last cherries from @Babblefood: http://tinyurl.com/33pevcu
Good luck! The winner will be announced on Friday.
P.S. Like cherries? Julie Van Rosendaal can teach you how a top Vancouver chef preserves them here. Caroline Campion makes killer “silver dollar hots” (that’s pancakes) topped with them here.

Andrew D commented on Aug 30 10 at 9:33 amUmmm Cherries!! I will definitely miss fresh watermelon from my garden. I’ll especially miss my wife’s watermelon granita from said watermelons. If you’ve tasted it, you wouldn’t need any further explanation as to why I’d miss that!
Ally commented on Aug 30 10 at 9:43 amTomatoes! Nothing can even come close to a vine ripened home grown tomato. I crave them all year round and then eat them daily from mid july to mid september.
The Jeanmeister commented on Aug 30 10 at 10:54 amPopovers and fresh lemonade. I realize you could probably make them year round if you wanted, but I only ever have them in the summer at the Jordan Pond House on Mt. Desert Island, Maine. An afternoon on the big lawn there is usually the highlight of my summer! Sadly, I don’t tweet, so those cherries will have to go to someone else. I would have loved to try them.
Angela McLeod commented on Aug 30 10 at 1:45 pmBruschetta! I just had six yummy slices of french bread with garden tomatoes, basil, red onion (that’s right, no garlic, call me crazy), EVOO and a very small amount of quality balsamic vinegar. Yum! It’s so fresh and delicious. Even better: I feel like I’m getting a whole lot of nutrients too. Oh bruschetta, I’ll be seeing you again next summer!
Susan commented on Aug 30 10 at 2:07 pmI will so miss the basil picked fresh to add to tomato mozzarella salad or whirred up into a pesto sauce.
Tracy commented on Aug 30 10 at 2:24 pmThere are so many it’s hard to choose – melons? Peaches, plums, and apricots? Cherries and berries? I can’t choose, I will truly miss all of them. But just think of the fall harvest foods we get to look forward to now.
Kim commented on Aug 30 10 at 2:34 pmwatermelon. I heart watermelon all summer long and will miss it dearly.
Rick P Stedman commented on Aug 30 10 at 3:10 pmBerries – strawberries, blueberries, blackberries. You can get them in the winter, but you can’t get 2 boxes for $5 and then just eat a whole bowl of them yourself.
Sarah Solducky commented on Aug 30 10 at 7:44 pmI will miss tomatoes straight from the garden!
brittney commented on Aug 30 10 at 9:58 pmi don’t have a twitter account but what i will miss is coking and baking with fresh picked peaches. it is a thrilling experience.
Giovanna La Marca commented on Aug 31 10 at 7:01 amI always miss the delicious zucchini flowers. Dipped in a batter of 1 egg, 1tablespoon on flour and i tablespoon of water and fried in extra virgin olive oil until delicately crisped on both sides, they are the delight of summer.
Jordan P commented on Aug 31 10 at 12:28 pmI will miss the HECK out of peaches and, of COURSE sweeeeeeet corn!

J'aime K. commented on Sep 02 10 at 11:51 amI will miss the fresh berries :( Oh so sad, even though they are expensive they were fabulous this season!

Tammy Ogle commented on Sep 06 10 at 10:32 pmThe summer food I will miss the most is the “what are we having for dinner tonight…whatever is ripe and ready for picking” dish. It is my “comfort” food. What a pleasure to eat whatever is fresh from your garden (or your neighbors garden). The dishes are the final product of the process of digging in the dirt, playing in the water, soaking up the sunshine, and watching your little seeds grow to accomplish their purpose….all these things are so comforting. These “comfort” foods will be sorely missed!
Tammy Ogle commented on Sep 06 10 at 10:43 pmTweeted from CrafTable so more people will know!
Bye bye summer….and your luscious fruits and veggies
