meatrecall1 Walmart Recalls 380,000 Pounds of Deli MeatFresh on the heels of a massive salmonella-related egg recall, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Monday that Tyson Foods subsidiary, Zemco industries, has issued an immediate recall of 172 tons of deli meat used in sandwiches sold in Walmart stores. A random sampling of the meat taken in Georgia tested positive for Listeria monocytongenes, a food-borne bacteria which can “cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.”

Though there have been no reports of illness from the tainted meat, Walmart believes most of the potentially listeria-infected products have likely already been consumed.

The recall does not include individual packages of deli meat, but does include “Marketside Grab and Go” sandwiches with a sell date of date of Aug. 25, 2010 or earlier. Walmart stated their support of the recall, “we immediately instructed stores to remove the impacted product from shelves.”

Meat Products affected by the Listeria-Related Recall:

  • Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches Black Forest Ham With Natural Juices Coated with Caramel Color (numbered 17800 1300)
  • Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches Hot Ham, Hard Salami, Pepperoni, Sandwich Peppers (numbered 17803 1300)
  • Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches Virginia Brand Ham With Natural Juices, made in New York, fully cooked bacon, sanwich pickles, sanwich peppers (numbered 17804 1300)
  • Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches ANGUS ROAST BEEF Coated with Caramel Color (numbered 17805 1300)
