Salmonella Outbreaks and Latest Egg Recall News
It started with the Wright County Egg recall, and then it grew. Now Hillandale Farms in Iowa has voluntarily recalled batches of their eggs due to the same salmonella strain. While they are not the same strain, an Oregon dairy just recalled milk and juice products and a New York farm recalled alfalfa, all for salmonella. It seems that everyone has salmonella contamination.
Keep reading to find out the recalled number list, specifics and precautions you can take to avoid getting infected…
Hillandale Farms Recall
Hillandale Farms announced Friday that it was voluntarily recalling 170 million eggs after tests confirmed salmonella. Eggs were sold under the brand names Hillandale Farms, Sunny Farms and Sunny Meadow. They were packed in 6-egg cartons, 12-egg cartons, 18-egg cartons, 30-egg package and 5-dozen cases and also loosely packed for the brand names Wholesome Farms and West Creek.
Look on the end of the carton or case label plant number (beginning with P) 1860 followed by Julian dates from 099-230 or plant number 1663 with Julian dates from 137-230.
Umpqua Dairy
Umpqua Dairy in Oregon pulled milk and juice products off the shelves after 23 cases of salmonella. Look for plant number 41-60 and milk with an expiration date of 9/5 or before and juice products with an expiration date of 9/15 or before.
Snow White Food Products Inc.
Brooklyn-based Snow White Food Products Inc. has recalled alfalfa sprouts that are contaminated with salmonella. There have been no reported cases of salmonella. Look for UPC code 0-46421-11236-6 to return to the store it was purchased at for a full refund. These products were distributed in New York State.
Worried about Salmonella? What can you do to prevent it?
Beyond just avoiding the contaminated milk and sprouts, the eggs get trickier. Be sure to cook all eggs completely. Avoid homemade products that use raw eggs like mayonnaise and hollandaise sauces or Caesar dressings and ask at restaurants to be sure their eggs are pasteurized until the recall is over. Additionally, be sure to wash hands immediately after touching eggs. Oh, and don’t lick the batter when you’re making cookies this weekend. I know. That one’s a toughie.

Buy local, Grow local, Eat local. It’s the only safe way to eat these days.
