donuts 220x300 Baked Cinnamon Sugar DonutsHave you noticed a plethora of cinnamon-sugar treats popping up around the web?  There are cinnamon-sugar muffins, cake donuts, biscuit donuts.  All of which I fully plan to make at some point in my kitchen because–like mac & cheese or mashed potatoes–cinnamon-sugar is a classic flavor combination.  Everyone loves it.  How could you not?  It’s sweet, simple, and about as warm and homey as a granny in a mu-mu.  This version yeilds a soft, sweet, yeasty dough.  It will bake up fresh, hot, and divine-tasting in less than two hours.  Once you taste these donuts, you’ll likely feel as I did–that you just lived the tastiest two-hours of your entire week.

Baked Cinnamon Sugar Donuts
1 cup milk
1 packet instant dry yeast
3 T. sugar
3 Tablespoons of butter, melted
1 egg
2-2 1/2 c. flour
For the cinnamon-sugar topping: 1 stick of butter, melted & 1/2 cup of prepared cinnamon sugar
Heat the milk in the microwave until very warm to the touch. Whisk in the yeast and sugar. Add the butter and egg, stir together until well mixed, then begin stirring in the flour 1/2 cup at a time with a wooden spoon until the dough becomes too thick and sticky to stir. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured surface and knead it until it’s smooth and elastic, adding flour by the Tablespoonfuls, if needed. Place the dough in a large, well-oiled bowl, cover lightly with a thin cloth, and allow it rise is a warm place until double in bulk (about 1 hour).

Place a littel oil or melted butter on a large cutting board, then turn the dough out onto the board. Gently roll the dough out until it’s about an inch thick. Cut using a donut cutter (or a large glass cup to cut the large donut shape, and a plastic bottle cap to cut the smaller hole in the center.)

Transfer the cut donuts to a lightly greased cookie sheet, and allow them to rise for another 30 minutes or so, until double in bulk. Once risen, bake in an oven preheated to 375 for 12 minutes, or just until the the donuts are ever so slightly browned at the edges. Once cool to the touch, dip cooked donuts in melted butter, then in cinnamon-sugar mixture. Serve warm. Enjoy!

Yes, Brooke, I’ll take a dozen of these, please. If you wouldn’t mind, send along some for my children.

I won’t be sharing.

So with all that BUTTER and then the sugar, why is this more healthy?
You might as well stop at Krispie Kream and then skip supper.

@ Mike – I’m guessing because they are baked, not fried in a vat of oil. I don’t think anyone is calling them health food by any means, just a *healthier* version. I think you could brush butter lightly on the top for the cinnamon sugar topping and not have to dip the entire donut.
