Kick Your Morning Coffee with This Chocolate Smoothie
I’ll let you know up front that I’m not a coffee drinker. So now you’re thinking, how dare I attempt to explain that the flavor of this simple chocolate smoothie–with nary a drop of coffee in it–could somehow have enough full-bodied flavor and heart-throbbing zing so as to be compared to the Almighty Morning Cup. But, here’s the thing. I’ve tasted tiramisu. And no less than eight times in my life have I eaten a stray coffee-flavored Jelly Belly. So, I know what I’m talking about here, okay?
Allright. I get that you’re still wary of me. Snorting through those little coffee-scented nostrils of yours, writing me off as misguided, Mormon, anti-Mary Kate & Ashley. Fine, fine. Mock if you will. In friendly rebuttal I will say this: sometimes magic happens in the kitchen. Sometimes flavors come together and surprise you. Sometimes you think you’re making a simple sugar-free, dairy-free, not-a-drop-of-coffee-in-it chocolate smoothie, and before you know it, you’re sucking down a whole pitcher of an absurdly delicious, cool and creamy drink and telling the world that you’ve discovered the antidote to morning coffee. And, sometimes you have more to write about a recipe, but the mere thought of it’s remarkable, coco-coffeesque flavor makes you stop typing midsentence and head into the kitchen to blend up some mo
No Joe Morning Smoothie
Makes enough for 4-5 adults, or one really thirsty one. Sugar free, dairy-free, coffee-free. Don’t let what this smoothie doesn’t have fool you. It’s an divine way to start your day.
1 (13.5 oz.) can Coconut Milk (the real kind, not the lite sort)
1 1/2 c. ice
1/3 c. cocoa powder
1/3 c. maple syrup
Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend until very smooth and creamy. Add more cocoa powder if a darker chocolate flavor is preferred, more maple syrup for additional sweetness, and more or less ice depending on your preferred texture and consistency. Enjoy!

Heather commented on Aug 21 10 at 5:55 pmI’m not sure that its as healthy as I hoped, but it sounds DEEEElicious.
April commented on Aug 22 10 at 10:08 pm@ Mel – my sentiments exactly! If you’re truly looking for sugar free, then stevia is your answer. Completely natural, not harmful to your body like Truvia, Splenda, Nutrasweet, etc. ALL are. I’ve been using stevia for years and in the above recipe, a few drops of stevia along with some maple extract will suffice in obtaining the same flavor intended.
The entire recipe sounds terrific! I heart coconut milk in just about anything I can get it into!
