Family Dinner: What’s Your Number?

Don’t know if you caught this over the weekend, but Michelle Obama had a live chat with AOL’s Kitchen Daily in order to promote her Let’s Move initiative to fight childhood obesity. One of the things she suggests to parents trying to take control their children’s diets is to cook dinner for the family more often – starting out with the very modest, very doable goal of once a week if they have to. I love this message. I’ve talked to a lot of people who are paralyzed by the idea of family dinner – a lot of parents who don’t know how to cook so instead of trying, they just shut down. I like Obama’s philosophy: it’s a lot easier to convince parents who don’t cook to start small, then let it build to twice a week, then three times a week then more as they get addicted to the high they get from feeding their kids good, healthy meals. I’m curious to know, though, how many times a week do you sit down to dinner for your family? I’d just like to know the sit-down number – even if what you’re eating is not necessarily homemade and from scratch. I’ll start by sharing my number: Five.

Our number is sadly just 2 – Saturday and Sunday. My son is only 18mo old and likes to eat dinner around 5:30pm and we just can’t be home that early. Instead, we cook dinner for ourselves 4 out of 5 weeknights and our nanny serves our son the same meal the following night. It’s not perfect but at least then we can control the number of healthy meals he gets!

Adrienne commented on Jul 21 10 at 9:37 am

My 2 kids and I eat together normally 6 nights a week if not 7. My husband works later and normally only eats with us 2-3 nights a week.

Liz commented on Jul 21 10 at 11:20 am

Ditto Adrienne. kids can’t wait until 7 when i get home from work.

4-5. We’re out and about on the weekend, so Friday and Saturday dinner is often out. But Sunday-Thurs is pretty much in and we’ve been trying to cook in rather than pick up take out. But we sit down together, whatever we’re eating. My kids are 3 and 5, definitely easier to do than when they were younger.

Beth commented on Jul 21 10 at 11:26 am

5 nights a week all four us eat together (5 year old son, 11 month old daughter). The other two nights either my husband or I go to the gym after work, so the other parent is eating a sit down meal with the kids, but all four of us together.

Amanda commented on Jul 21 10 at 11:35 am

It’s just me and my husband right now, but we cook together 4-5 nights a week.

Katie commented on Jul 21 10 at 11:45 am

I usually cook 6 nights a week. I feed the kids (4 and 2) a modified version of our meal earlier in the evening and then when my husband gets home, we all sit down together. The kids join us to nibble on a little more or just to talk about our day. It doesn’t always work out perfectly, but we do our best!

Laura commented on Jul 21 10 at 11:58 am

We cook at least 6 nights a week, and all 6 of us (kids 10, 6, 4 and 2) eat together.

Shaina0 commented on Jul 21 10 at 12:03 pm

7 – sometimes the kids (2 and 4) eat at 6:00, and we sit with them, then we have grown-up dinner around 8:00; sometimes we all eat together at 6:00. Depends on whether we adults want to eat pizza or lamb!

Roxi commented on Jul 21 10 at 12:19 pm

i cook 5 or 6 nights a week, my husband cooks on sunday night. we try not to go out or get take away, but if we do it’s only once a week. we all sit down together unless my husband’s late getting home from work.

jo commented on Jul 21 10 at 1:01 pm

Almost 7 — the three of us probably grab take out once every week and a half and eat out every other week… but it’s almost always together. Someone’s gotta be out of town, sick in bed, at a sleepover, or something else for us not to eat together. We do occasionally have dinner and a movie night where we eat in the living room and put on a DVD but usually it’s at the table inside or out back, face to face. In fact, dinner might just be the cornerstone of our family life.

Ivy commented on Jul 21 10 at 1:05 pm

It’s just me and my husband for now, but we eat breakfast and dinner together every day (most of them at home). I’m sure the record will change when we have kids.

City Share commented on Jul 21 10 at 1:38 pm

Our number really varies. And it’s hard to quantify. Example: Fridays, my husband plays coed soccer with an awesome group of people who mostly also have families, and since it started in May, our go-to dinners have been pizza and berries. Our family is together, with a gaggle of other families–pretty much what we dreamed of when we moved to the ‘burbs, right?
But if I had to guess: I’d say 3-4 nights a week we all sit at the table together and eat dinner that I prepared. And that goes to 5-6 if you count my kids and me as a “family” when my husband is working late. But I guess that’s not really the point.

MemeGRL commented on Jul 21 10 at 2:00 pm

5 or 6. We live in an area without many restaurants, so no take-out for us. I go to a class one night a week, and we usually eat at my parents’ once a week. Otherwise, it’s me, my husband and our 2.5 year old together for dinner. Luckily, we our work schedules are flexible and we both are home early.

mary ann commented on Jul 21 10 at 2:23 pm

Sit down to dinner together, all three of us (two adults, one two year old), I would say 1-2. But, if we say kid plus at least one parent eating together it jumps to 4-5. My husband and I are both out of the house at dinner time frequently, so we trade off. And sometimes, circumstances conspire and there is just no way to get adult dinner on the table in time to feed an antsy 2 year old.

Now, I do have to say that if we are talking home cooked meals only, no takeout, no short cuts like stir fried gyoza and veggies, we go down to 1 or 2 again.

Mary commented on Jul 21 10 at 2:45 pm

I’d say we cook 5 or 6 nights a week and eat together as a family (my husband, myself, two daughters, ages 8 and 3). We usually plan five meals on the weekend, shop for those, and then have a “leftover buffet” on the other night. I’m lucky to have a husband who also loves to cook (when we were first married, we would argue about who got to cook that night; ah, how far away THOSE days seem) and an eight-year-old who, thanks to Molly Katzen’s Honest Pretzels, cooks dinner at least three times a month for the whole family.

Leah commented on Jul 21 10 at 2:58 pm

My three children (4, 2.5, and 9 months), along with my husband and I eat together 7 nights a week. We aim to sit down by 6:15, but it’s usually 6:30 or a little later before we’re eating. The older the children get, the more special this time becomes.

Fittsy commented on Jul 21 10 at 3:19 pm

It’s just my husband and I, and we make dinner 5-6 nights a week. The other 1-2 nights we go out to dinner to try different restaurants in our neighborhood.

Christine commented on Jul 21 10 at 3:37 pm

usually 5. i have 6 kids from newborn to 13. when soccer season begins, it goes back down to 4. but i cook dinner for most of us 5-6 nights a week.

kris commented on Jul 21 10 at 4:03 pm

We sit down together 3-4 nights a week, usually 3 of those nights we have a (mostly) home cooked meal. The other 3 nights, my husband and I are home from work after dinner time.

Mary commented on Jul 21 10 at 4:39 pm

4-6 depending on the season. I’m a single mom & work f/t, but i make an effort to prep on weekends so we can eat healthy meals together, at home, and share things about our day without having to put in 30-60mins each night. the bonus about this has been my kiddo is also great about eating & trying new foods and as she gets older she’s been helping me in the kitchen- even bigger bonus.
one tradition we have on ballet class nights is ‘breakfast for dinner’ and that takes the pressure of the evenings that we get home late.

Phaedra commented on Jul 21 10 at 6:15 pm

4 or 5. It’s getting a little harder because of being a single mom with teens but it’s important to all 3 of us

Mary commented on Jul 21 10 at 6:49 pm

probably 5 or 6. try to go out once a week unless we get stuck without anything in the fridge due to bad planning or too many playdates. we also eat lunch and breakfast at home every day.

BG commented on Jul 21 10 at 6:49 pm

I also think that people who read food blogs would have a higher number. Might not be a versatile enough crowd here.

BG commented on Jul 21 10 at 6:50 pm

Probably 5 most weeks with our five-year-old daughter helping prepare the meal at least two of those nights and all of us sitting down together at the kitchen table (or on the deck in this beautiful summer weather) each of those nights.

Ginny commented on Jul 21 10 at 7:17 pm

between 5 and 7. some weeks my husband and i will have a ‘grown up’ dinner after the kids are in bed. but the rest of the time is all home cooked meals and the four of us sitting at the table (me, husband, my 5 yr old and my 3 yr old) and it is definitely my favorite time of the day!

mery commented on Jul 21 10 at 7:46 pm

7 nights a week for my two kids (ages 6 & 8) and me. Husband is a soldier and is away for training or deployment regularly, so when he’s home with us, he’s right there at the table nightly. But his frequent absences, I feel, make it all the more important for me to be dining with our kids (and talking, teaching) every chance I get.

Sheila commented on Jul 21 10 at 7:54 pm

6-7. Our schedule is flexible and we usually all eat together every night–just me, my husband, and my one-year-old.

Lonica commented on Jul 21 10 at 11:28 pm

7 nights a week, and we’ve got three kids (ages 8, 3, and 1). Though I don’t get home at 6:30 every day, my wife is very insistent that we continue with family dinner every night. Her reasoning: when they hit their teens, we’ll never be able to sustain this, so let’s enjoy it while we can.

Dave commented on Jul 22 10 at 8:09 am

I only eat with my boyfriend, but we eat lunch and dinner together everyday. I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Maren commented on Jul 22 10 at 9:30 am

We strive for 6 and usually wind up with 4-5, depending on what’s going on in the evenings.

jesser commented on Jul 22 10 at 9:37 am

3-4 for sure, sometimes 5 if I’ve had a slow work week and have left over energy!

Tera Stephens commented on Jul 23 10 at 12:36 am

I have dinner with my son (2.5) almost every night – we generally cook, but I’ll order take out 2-3 times a month when I’m too tired (or hot!) to cook.

rose commented on Jul 24 10 at 9:18 pm

Usually 7, but our family is just my husband and me, so we don’t have to drag kids to the dinner table. But we love having dinner together every night since we don’t see much of each other during the day. Preparing dinner together is lots more fun and less work than doing it all by yourself.

Lisa commented on Jul 26 10 at 12:51 pm

7. My oldest is not yet 4 so there isn’t any ballet or soccer or anything. And breakfast at least 2 times a week.

Bridgit commented on Jul 26 10 at 4:28 pm

7 nights a week. Even if it’s take out, we all sit together at the table and eat. The kids *never* (except occasionally when someone is sick) eat in front of the tv. Even when I’m just serving them (and eating with my spouse later), I sit with them and we talk.

Kate Bassett commented on Jul 26 10 at 8:44 pm

7! We are both chefs and in education now so it is much simplier than when we were in the industry cooking for other people…

Kristina P-M commented on Jul 26 10 at 11:17 pm

7!

6. It is the glue that keeps us together after being scattered about all day!

Jennifer Polimeno commented on Jul 28 10 at 9:57 pm

We eat family dinner together 4-5 days a week, often with other families. The other nights one or the other of us is out of the house, but the parent at home with the kid is eating family dinner. We cook from scratch most of those nights.
