How to Choose Corn without Offending Your Neighbors

first of the season 200x300 How to Choose Corn without Offending Your NeighborsYes, it’s disappointing when I bring home what I thought would be a corn jackpot from the farmer’s market only to discover that it’s a bland, chalky lot. Still, I refuse to be one of those market-goers who peels every husk in the bin to see how plump the kernels are, leaving the dregs for the rest of us rule-followers to fight over. Of course, the best way to tell that your corn is going to be fresh is to look at the kernels (they should be plump, close together, and go all the way up to the tip of the ear) but since that isn’t going to help the more polite market-goer, here’s a tip: look at the silks. They should be golden brown and the husks — if no one has been meddling — should be snug.
