Wimbledon 2010 kicked off today with two top talents in celebrity-parent athletics: Roger Federer, Wimbledon top-ranked male, nearly lost in the first round to Colombia’s Alejandro Falla, while women’s darling Kim Clijsters easily toppled opponent Maria Elena Camerin. I hate to say it, but for Roger Federer, kids may may not be a career enhancer. And what does Clijsters have to say about having children? All that, below.
We’ve talked before about the potential hazards of fatherhood on Federer’s career. Today, Federer found himself two sets down before winning 5-7 4-6 6-4 7-6 6-0. If he’d lost in this first round, it would have been one of the greatest upsets in Wimbledon history, especially since Falla was labeled “canon fodder” in today’s match program. Perhaps that insult inspired the underdog — he played beautifully. Said Federer on his way off the court: “I definitely got very lucky out there. I have lost many matches this year which I should have won; this is one I should have lost but I came through. But that is sometimes how grass court tennis works.”
Aye, better to blame the court surface than your wife and kids (here’s hoping that they hadn’t kept him up too late on Father’s Day!).
As for the Belgian Kim Clijsters, she performed heroically, sailing into the next round with a 6-0 6-3 win against Italy’s Maria Elena Cameri. It’s Kim’s first Wimbledon in four years, and her first as a mother. She took two years off to raise daughter Jada, before returning to tennis last year and winning the U.S. Open (below is a picture of Kim Clijsters and Jada right after the win).
Refreshingly, like so many other mothers, Clijsters was conflicted about resuming her career. “When I started to train, I would give Jada kiss after kiss before I went to the car. I asked myself, ‘Am I the worst mother in the world?’” she said. But then she realized that she might actually be doing other women a service. “It’s good if, in some small way, I can make other mothers feel OK about going to work.” To boot, for Kim Clijsters, kids seem to be inspiring.
Kudos to that, and here’s hoping we see a parent with the trophy when this year’s wimbledon champions are crowned.
