The questionable reviews of Russell Crowe’s new movie Robin Hood didn’t damper his family holiday in Rome, which coincided with wife Danielle Spencer’s 41st birthday. A jovial Crowe was seen loving on his two sons, Charlie and Tennyson, and just seemed like an overall attentive father. The family did it all — walked the Spanish steps, threw coins into Trevi Fountain and took a carriage ride around the famous monuments. We’ve been eagerly anticipating the Robin Hood movie ever since news broke about its cast. After all, it stars two of our favorite celebrity parents: Russell Crowe as the man in tights, and Cate Blanchett as Maid Marion. Today Robin Hood finally hit theaters. Which means the reviews are out. And all we can say is, “Ouch.” It turns out this Robin Hood is a decidedly un-merry, un-child-friendly romp through Gladiator territory.
Excerpts from some of our favorite reviewers (and note, it’s not all bad news!):
Amid reports of Matt Lauer cheating on his wife of 12 years, Annette Roque, came a strange tidbit: apparently, the Lauers will continue to spend time together on weekends as a family, and Matt and Annette will even vacation together with their children, Jack, 8, and Romy, 6 and Thijs, 2, at their home in the Hamptons.
Now I have to say, I would ordinarily praise the type of ‘let’s do this for the kids’ attitude that such plans seem to indicate. After all, it is important to make a separation or divorce as easy on the kids as possible, and one way to do that is to get along. But I always figured that the only couples capable of pulling off this type of cooperative spirit were people who had ‘we fell out of love’ types of break-ups. Not people whose marriage broke apart because of infidelity or reports of “wild behavior” on the part of one spouse while he was away on a business trip.

Russell Crowe has got to straighten out the superhero situation in his house.
Yesterday in Cannes, the Robin Hood star took sons Charlie and Tennyson to a photo call for the new movie, which comes out tomorrow, and Tennyson who is in the prime good guys vs. bad guys years was dressed in a Superman t-shirt. Superman! I mean sure, he can fly and has all of that faster than a speeding bullet hype, but Robin Hood is way cooler. He uses a bow and arrow, and saves Maid Marian and creates a world of havoc in Sherwood Forest. And it’s his dad! Can’t we figure out some sort of T-shirt for him, or send him out there in a pair of tights or something?

Most of Cate Blanchett’s movie roles aren’t exactly family-friendly fare. I mean, what 8-year-old boy is chomping at the bit to see his mother as Queen Elizabeth? Or as Katharine Hepburn? Or a British school teacher having an affair with a teenager?
But that won’t be a problem with Cate Blanchett’s new movie, Robin Hood, which hits theaters on Friday. In it, Blanchett plays Maid Marian, who is neither a wallflower nor a demure young lass waiting to be rescued by a white knight. In fact, according to Blanchett, she shoots a mean—if occasionally errant—arrow. Speaking of her three boys, Dashiell, 8, Roman, 6, and Ignatius, 2, Blanchett descibres her sons’ reaction to her new role.
“I went up in their estimation from the first night on set, when I was called on to shoot a flaming arrow, missed my mark and hit a light, which duly exploded,” Blacnheet stodl the London Times, as reported by People. “I mean, how many mums do stuff like that?”
She’s got me there. I can juggle, belch on command and produce an Elmo-shaped birthday cake in just about an hour. But pyrotechnics are not part of my repertoire. Continue reading »
