Amy Winehouse's passing entices us to look back on Frances Bean Cobain.
With Amy Winehouse’s passing, other celebrity parents who left us due to addiction are coming back into the light including Kurt Cobain and Heath Ledger. But it’s their children that we worry about.
Frances Bean Cobain was not even 2-years-old when her father tragically took his own life. Cobain turned 18-years-old last summer and inherited a multi-million dollar inheritance.
But Cobain has gained so much more than just a lump sum of money. The late rocker’s daughter interned for Rolling Stone magazine in 2008, and she debuted a collection of dark sketches at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery in July 2010. The artwork drew critical praise and sold out quickly.
Today marks the 18th birthday of Frances Bean Cobain, the only child of iconic Grunge super-couple, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and Hole’s Courtney Love.
An 18th birthday is a major milestone in every teenager’s life, but for Ms. Cobain it means a major transfer of fortunes as she inherits the trustfund left to her following her father’s suicide in 1994.
As the sole beneficiary of the trust fund, she will receive a multi-million dollar inheritance.
Frances keeps a relatively low profile despite being the sole offspring of the most influential rock and roll couples of the Grunge era.
Over at blogging headquarters, BlogHer.com, one columnist is taking a compassionate view of Courtney Love’s recent onslaught of Tweets to estranged daughter Frances Bean Cobain. What if, she asks, Love wasn’t famous and was just a regular mommy blogger who went on rants via her blog or Twitter? Wouldn’t we, the blogging community, be more empathetic of a regular mom with extraordinary problems (losing a husband to suicide, substance abuse, custody issues, etc.)? Courtney Love’ estrangement from daughter Frances Bean Cobain—now in the custody of her late dad Kurt Cobain’s family—is well documented. So it’s no wonder that Love looked so distraught while house hunting in NYC’s SoHo neighborhood yesterday (photo at left). And yet, no one was prepared for the very public airing of the rock star’s daughter-love that took place on Twitter on Monday. She laid bare her hopes and dreams for 17-year-old Frances, unedited and raw, for all of the internet to see.
She dispensed the kind of advice most moms and daughters share tenderly face-to-face. It’s heartbreaking and heartfelt—there’s no doubt that, whatever her actions, Love loves her daughter. In the tweets, Love also discusses to the end of her relationship with “e” (Ed Norton?). Excerpts below:

She spews her usual nuttiness in an interview with Clash magazine, where she says among other things that Frances, 17, “would have to be stupid” not to come back to her and that at one time she was so poor that neither her or France owned a single pair of shoes.
