19 Kids and Counting Votes: Who’s The Duggars’ Presidential Choice?
The Duggar family is back in the spotlight again, but this time it’s not because of their reality show, their large family or even the recent loss of the baby that mom Michelle was expecting.
They’re now turning their attention to promoting their personal choice for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. So who gets the Duggars’ blessing?
Their website has a new video posted to their home page slideshow, a short speech from Michelle: “Hello! This is Michelle Duggar from 19 Kids and Counting, and I want to share with you why my family is supporting Rick Santorum for president.”
Devoutly Catholic, Romney’s values and platform appeal to the conservative Christian Duggars.
“As our next president, Rick Santorum will promote drilling for crude oil and natural gas in America, which in turn lowers prices, allowing families to keep more of what they earn, while stimulating the economy and creating more jobs,” Michelle says.
She adds that as a Pennsylvania senator, Santorum has fought for spending cuts and lower taxes, and that his presidential agenda includes encouraging small-business growth. His opposition to gay marriage and gun control also scores points with the Duggars.
The family no doubt feels a kinship with Santorum because of his own large household – he has 7 living children – and because his wife Karen, like Michelle, once lost a pre-term baby. Unlike Michelle’s miscarriage, however, Karen underwent an induced labor to save her life after developing a serious uterine infection. (Santorum has been criticized for maintaining an anti-abortion stance despite their experience.)
The family came out in support of the senator during the Iowa caucuses last week. Jim Bob said their decision came after much prayer, and added that “if you are looking for a family values candidate, this is your man.”
Is he yours? Have you ever chosen a political candidate based on support from a reality-show star or other celebrity?
