Nancy Kerrigan Is Teaching Her Daughter to Skate!
Over the winter break, my husband, a former high-school hockey goalie, took our two children ice skating. Our daughter, like me, is kind of wobbly – hanging onto the boards is our style – but our son is a natural on blades. After just a few minutes of adjusting to the slippery surface, he was zipping around as if he’d done it all his life.
For my husband, seeing his boy coasting around joyfully was the kind of that’s-my-kid moment that warms a parent’s heart. And that’s surely what Nancy Kerrigan feels, too, when she sees her daughter on the ice.
Little Nicole is only 3 1/2, but she’s been on skates since she was barely old enough to walk – and “she seems to like it,” Kerrigan recently told People.
Her sons, 16-year-old Matthew and 6 1/2-year-old Brian, are seasoned skaters too, but none of the children is especially interested in having their two-time Olympic medalist mom help them hone their axels and camel spins.
“They all like going skating, and they definitely like people clapping for them,” Kerrigan says. “They say ‘Watch me’ and I try to give them tips, but they don’t necessarily listen to me.”
But if one day Nicole should change her mind and decide to follow in her famous mom’s – um – bladesteps, “I’m happy to help her,” Kerrigan says, though she acknowledges that a competitive skater’s life is far from easy.
