MTV’s “Teen Mom” Discouraging Real Teens From Getting Pregnant?
Is "Teen Mom" helping real teens?
While having a baby as a teenager used to be frowned upon in years past, teen moms seem to be all the rage in pop culture right now. Ever since MTV introduced their “Teen Mom” series, the girls starring in the shows have become celebrities in their own right.
The names Amber Portwood, Maci Bookout, and Farrah Abraham may not be recognizable to most women my age who are not celebrity bloggers, but walk into any high school in America and I’m sure you will find that these are household names for teen girls.
There has been a lot of debate over whether the “Teen Mom” series is actually glamorizing being a teen parent, or whether it is showing real teens what life with a baby is like and discouraging them from getting pregnant.
New reports show that the birth rate in the U.S. among teens is actually down 9% from last year. Could “Teen Mom” have anything to do with this?
It may seem like kind of a long shot, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the show has made teens think twice about the consequences of having unprotected sex. While there are a handful of girls who have gotten a reality TV career out of being teen moms, the “reality” of raising a baby as a teen is much worse than what is depicted on MTV.
