Puff puff: Katherine Heigl

Thank goodness actress Katherine Heigl quit smoking before she became a mother.

The fashionable mom was seen leaving Hollywood’s Katsuya restaurant puffing on an electronic cigarette. Last year Katherine told Parade magazine how she replaced regular smoking with an e-cig habit when she became a mom.

“Now I use an electronic cigarette,” she said. “I know it’s ridiculous, but it’s helping me not to actually smoke real cigarettes. You feel like you are smoking, and you get to exhale but it’s just water vapor and not nicotine. I’ve been doing it for six months. Smoking sucks!”

Katherine uses a Smokestik, a product she has endorsed, and proceeds from sales go to her dog rescue charity The Compassion Revolution.

Well, there’s a good thing she’s not smoking real cigarettes anymore: her poor daughter Naleigh would be forced to kiss the women with the worst breath in Hollywood.

Do you think electronic cigarette smoking is a good idea? Check out our photos.

Good for Katherine! Tobacco smoking is one of the most difficult addictions to quit, by far. I commend her for taking the plunge and making the effort to do it. And good on her for using e-cigs to do so. It’s really a shame that electronic cigarettes aren’t better-known, although I know that they will be ubiquitous within a few years. Not only are they a lot safer than cigs – no tar, no carbon, no combustion by-products like benzene, toluene, and other cancer causers – but they’re also a great tool to help smokers kick the habit because with them, you still get the oral fixation and ‘smoking experience’ that so many smokers crave, but you can also slowly taper off nicotine without having to quit the oral habit cold-turkey. I used them to get off nicotine myself. It’s really amazing just how much of my addiction was the oral habit, and being able to still enjoy that safely while unhooking myself from nicotine was a total godsend. I used e-cigarettes and refills that I purchased from a company called Virgin Vapor (virginvapor.com) which is one of the very few outfits online that make all-organic e-cigarette liquids. They have a ton of awesome flavors, organic flavorings, several nicotine strengths available, and super-helpful customer service. While I’m still socially puffing on my e-cig when I’m out and about, I’m off nicotine completely, feel about 15 years younger, and haven’t touched (or wanted to touch) a real cigarette in over half a year. Oh, and I get a ton of attention from people asking me what that neat gadget is :) which is great for meeting new people! e-cigs ROCK!
