Harry Connick Jr. joins American Girl to aid New Orleans.

With the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina reaching its sixth anniversary this August 25, Harry Connick Jr. and his daughter Kate, 13, have teamed up with American Girl while using their musical talents to honor the city’s culture as well as bring aid to those in need.

The Connicks teamed up with American Girl to release Kate’s first original song, “A Lot Like Me,” which is written by the Grammy-award winner himself. The song is inspired by American Girl’s two new historical characters, Cécile and Marie-Grace, whro are from New Orleans.

When Harry was originally approached with the song idea he said, “I couldn’t think of anybody better to sing the song than Kate. It kind of had a young pop sound to it.”

As far as Kate is concerned, she’s happy to have used this opportunity to jump start her musical career. “It’s been really fun. I like the fact that I can start off with this. And working with my dad is always a pleasure.”

The song, “A Lot Like Me” is available exclusively on iTunes and all proceeds benefit after-school programming at the brand new Ellis Marsalis Center for Music in New Orleans, a great space that includes classrooms, a recording studio, listening library, and a performance hall. The center is opening August 25, on the sixth anniversary of Katrina. Kate is scheduled to perform the new song at the opening.

“‘A Lot Like Me’ is a really fun song with such a good message, like the books about Cécile and Marie-Grace. It’s about knowing that it doesn’t matter what skin color you have or what religion you follow-what’s inside is what’s important,” said Kate. “I have friends who have different backgrounds. They come from different places, so this means something to me. I’m just so happy that I get to be a part of it.”

Let’s hope that these two team up more often in the future!
