Is Mariska Hargitay leaving Law & Order: SVU?
Rumors have been swirling for awhile that Mariska Hargitay was quitting Law & Order: SVU to spend more time with her family, including her recently adopted daughter (photo, left).
While Mariska Hargitay is not leaving Law & Order: SVU, she is planning to cut her work time on the series… and that means a new leading lady will step in.
Is Jennifer Love Hewitt replacing Mariska Hargitay?
While nothing is a done deal yet, here’s what we know: Mariska Hargitay will be on Law & Order: SVU’s 13th season in a limited capacity, so the “Mariska Hargitay leaving” rumors can be put to rest. For now.
Hargitay’s Detective Olivia Benson will be promoted to a supervising position in the precinct, so Christopher Meloni’s Detective Elliot Stabler will need a new partner – and Jennifer Love Hewitt may very well replace Hargitay, as she’s reportedly in talks with the series.
Mariska Hargitay’s decision to work less hours on Law & Order: SVU would free up more time for Mariska to spend time with her husband and two kids, August and Amaya.
Mariska joins other famous moms like Julia Roberts, who decided to cut back on acting roles to be available for her family.
I think it’s admirable for career driven actresses to step back and spend time with their kids. Would you do the same if you were a working actress?

Mary commented on May 16 11 at 4:28 pmI’m all for Mariska wanting to spend more time with her family – it’s great that she’s able to do so despite what I imagine must be considerable pressure to keep on going full throttle from the show’s producers….but I really hope Jennifer Love Hewitt isn’t the new replacement. She has all the acting talent of a cardboard box and I can’t think of a quicker way to make the series completely tank.

Cj commented on May 18 11 at 11:37 pmI really hope she doesn’t leave either, they will be loosing alot of decade old fans if this does happen, I can admire her cutting back but I just do not think she needs to be “replaced” by noone because honestly I don’t think that there is a better actress out there that can do it like she can and plus her and Elliot just mesh so well together and make an awesome crime fighting duo. I do think the show will change alot if this is done and I really hope the producers can make the right decisions and find some way to keep Mariska in the “limelight” cause she is truly awesome and I wouldn’t have anyone in her or elliots place !!
cory george masullo commented on May 19 11 at 11:41 pmI am totally so disappointed that Mariska Hargitay is cutting back on her role on SVU. I have been a loyal fan of the show from the beginning. When they were trying to negotiate salaries etc. I prayed that they would get what they deserved as far as their salary went. The two characters work so well together I can not imagine Benson and Stabler not being partners. The show will never be the same and I really feel very strongly that alot of us dedicated viewers will be lost. I know the feeling of wanting to spend more time with your children but not seeing them together every week will be a huge disappointment. Of all people Jennifer Love Hewitt would be my last choice as Elliotts partner. Please let Mariska know just how much of a huge part of SVU she is.
Cody commented on May 20 11 at 5:16 pmPeople are speculating that Jennifer Love Hewitt would be the new detective, but would they really do that since she guest starred as a victim last fall? That would be kind of hard to explain.
