Christy Turlington Burns Helping Moms Worldwide: Today Show (Video)
Supermodel and mom Christy Turlington Burns appeared on the Today Show to discuss Every Mother Counts and the US TV broadcast premiere of “No Woman, No Cry.”
The mother of two and wife to director Ed Burns has become an advocate for maternal health, and on May 7 debuts her documentary (which she directed and produced), “No Woman, No Cry.”
She also blogged for Today Moms on the importance of maternal health, the first in a three-part series of blog posts by Turlington Burns, who describes how her scary childbirth experience made her aware of maternal health issues around the world.
“The majority of women I encountered around the world while filming (and since) have none of the support or comforts that I enjoyed and most of them aren’t even aware that it’s their human right to have access to care. For many of the world’s women, it is not only perceived to be an obligation to conceive and bear children, it is often believed that this is a woman’s only purpose or value in life,” she said.
“I learned that hundreds of thousands of girls and women die each and every year in pregnancy or childbirth and almost all of these deaths are preventable. This was the moment I knew I had to find a way to contribute to this cause.”
I loved Christy growing up and looked up to her as a model; but seeing her now and the work that she’s doing now as a mother, is simply amazing.
This Mother’s Day, consider a donation to Christy’s Every Mother Counts to help women worldwide, an advocacy and mobilization campaign to increase education and support for maternal and child health.
Watch “No Woman, No Cry” on May 7th on the Oprah Winfrey Network.
