Tina Fey’s Prayer for a Daughter! A MUST Read For Any Parent
If you were toying with the idea of going out to buy Tina Fey’s new book Bossypants, this piece from it will no doubt seal the deal. After reading this you may find yourself running not walking to the nearest bookstore to get your own copy and see what other genius she dishes out. This ‘prayer for a daughter’ isn’t just for her daughter. It’s for anyone who has a daughter, thinking about having a daughter or has been a daughter. Hell, it can even be applied to sons!
Check out Tina Fey’s lovely, touching and totally true ‘prayer for a daughter.’
First, Lord: No tattoos. May neither Chinese symbol for truth nor Winnie-the-Pooh holding the FSU logo stain her tender haunches.
May she be Beautiful but not Damaged, for it’s the Damage that draws the creepy soccer coach’s eye, not the Beauty.
When the Crystal Meth is offered, May she remember the parents who cut her grapes in half And stick with Beer.
Guide her, protect her
When crossing the street, stepping onto boats, swimming in the ocean, swimming in pools, walking near pools, standing on the subway platform, crossing 86th Street, stepping off of boats, using mall restrooms, getting on and off escalators, driving on country roads while arguing, leaning on large windows, walking in parking lots, riding Ferris wheels, roller-coasters, log flumes, or anything called “Hell Drop,” “Tower of Torture,” or “The Death Spiral Rock ‘N Zero G Roll featuring Aerosmith,” and standing on any kind of balcony ever, anywhere, at any age.
Lead her away from Acting but not all the way to Finance. Something where she can make her own hours but still feel intellectually fulfilled and get outside sometimes And not have to wear high heels.
What would that be, Lord? Architecture? Midwifery? Golf course design? I’m asking You, because if I knew, I’d be doing it, Youdammit.
May she play the Drums to the fiery rhythm of her Own Heart with the sinewy strength of her Own Arms, so she need Not Lie With Drummers.
Grant her a Rough Patch from twelve to seventeen. Let her draw horses and be interested in Barbies for much too long, For childhood is short – a Tiger Flower blooming Magenta for one day – And adulthood is long and dry-humping in cars will wait.
O Lord, break the Internet forever, That she may be spared the misspelled invective of her peers And the online marketing campaign for Rape Hostel V: Girls Just Wanna Get Stabbed.
And when she one day turns on me and calls me a Bitch in front of Hollister, Give me the strength, Lord, to yank her directly into a cab in front of her friends, For I will not have that Shit. I will not have it.
And should she choose to be a Mother one day, be my eyes, Lord, that I may see her, lying on a blanket on the floor at 4:50 A.M., all-at-once exhausted, bored, and in love with the little creature whose poop is leaking up its back.
“My mother did this for me once,” she will realize as she cleans feces off her baby’s neck. “My mother did this for me.” And the delayed gratitude will wash over her as it does each generation and she will make a Mental Note to call me. And she will forget. But I’ll know, because I peeped it with Your God eyes.
Amen.

ConcernedNeighbor commented on Apr 18 11 at 2:25 pmTake the God out of it (if you want a Higher Power, please make it non-gendered), include the father’s care and parenting as much as the mother’s, and include a wish that the daughter be financially savvy, and rewarded financially as much as boys for her work, not just “intellectually fulfilled,” and then I can support this.
theresa polachek commented on Apr 18 11 at 6:34 pmwow its amazing & so accurate im a grandmother to 17 & i hope they grow like a flower that bright & awesome ill read your book you go girl
Kelli commented on Apr 18 11 at 11:58 pmOK, I teared up on this one…my baby is 21…and sane for the most part.
Dirty415 commented on Apr 19 11 at 8:39 amThat’s one classy broad.
@ConcernedNeighbor – It’s called humor, relax with all the PCness. The title is “Prayer for a daughter” not “Wish for a tenderness child.”
herself commented on Apr 19 11 at 8:41 amHey concernedneighbor, She said dad cut the grapes in half…what more do you want? This is HER prayer, if dad,or YOU, want your own prayer, then go make one up…to your Higher Power. I’m sure tons of people will support it. : )
Dirty415 commented on Apr 19 11 at 8:41 amtenderness = genderless

mamapoekie commented on Apr 19 11 at 11:35 amI can’t help but wonder: why should she not have tattoos? Why should she not be an actress?
Calvin commented on Apr 19 11 at 12:42 pmAnd may she develop a passion, for cooking or gardening, reading or swimming, or some other pursuit, that will last for the rest of her life so that when people call and say ‘lets do this,’ if it sounds boring or dumb or expensive or a waste of time she can say, no thanks, I have other plans, and not feel like she has to be part of a herd.
Tara commented on Apr 19 11 at 2:17 pmLove it! Got two daughters. Made me teary.
Missy commented on Apr 19 11 at 2:41 pmWhat God is she praying to? Because it definately is not the God of Christianity.
Betty commented on Apr 19 11 at 6:34 pmThe last person who commented re: What God is she praying to? Sorry, do not put the God of Christianity into a box or speak for all Christians… God hears our prayers, however they are expressed… and I can relate to most of this prayer!
Jan Windham commented on Apr 19 11 at 7:23 pmLighten up a little, Missy. :))
ConcernedNeighbor commented on Apr 19 11 at 7:32 pmActually I think this might be a semi-satirical look at the way women project their neuroses on their daughters in a patriarchal system (i.e. a male-dominant system, with “God,” etc.)
amother commented on Apr 19 11 at 7:52 pmI’m with ConcernedNeighbor. If this is not satirical I’m pretty meh on it.
Tammy Jowers commented on Apr 19 11 at 9:11 pmPeople, this is Tina Fey’s wish for her daughter…not your daughter. It is personal. No one cares how you would alter it, what God you pray to or how your views don’t aline with a comedian’s. Get over yourself!! Get a sense of humor and move on.
Debbie Hartmann commented on Apr 19 11 at 9:24 pmThis is hilarious. I laughed through the whole thing! She is an outstanding comedian.
mdmom commented on Apr 19 11 at 11:19 pmLoved this. Raising a daughter is in many ways a “leap of faith”… no matter how much you think you know going into it, you don’t realize how difficult it is until you’re in the middle of it and being tested (i.e. “the teen years”). It’s then that a mother finds herself more helpless than she ever expected, and her faith is tested… much like Christianity. I think the satirical parallel is quite appropriate… because both are born and nurtured from love.
Jessica Leist commented on Apr 19 11 at 11:49 pmI’m still peeing my pants! This is great! So true, so true!
Donna Jean commented on Apr 20 11 at 10:37 amGoosebumps and tears at the same time as I was smiling! My daughter is a freshman in college, this is awesome to read for me and her! I’m headed out to buy the book!
fran commented on Apr 20 11 at 11:16 amThis was great. Now if she would only apologize for what she did/does to Sarah Palin, then I would have more respect for her. But, then again, maybe that’s why she doesn’t want her daughter to be an actor, so she won’t be forced to do slimy bits about people for MONEY!
Planet Mom commented on Apr 20 11 at 1:25 pmDear God this is brilliant…and hilarious…and so completely befitting for our world today! To be sure, all three of my daughters will benefit from Fey’s prayer. http://www.melindawentzel.com.
FSUmom commented on Apr 20 11 at 5:40 pmI feel as though I have spied into my own parents’ prayers . . . just in case there is a higher power, I have now prayed this for my own daughter.
Mark commented on Apr 20 11 at 8:21 pmDear Tina,
May your daughter truly know and love God, know that God loves her. May you both have (or continure to have) a real relationship with God and find a joy free of irony. But yet discovery God’s laughter even in the absurdity, fraility, and silliness of professional bowling.
Jlam commented on Apr 20 11 at 9:14 pmQuote”Take the God out of it (if you want a Higher Power, please make it non-gendered), include the father’s care and parenting as much as the mother’s, and include a wish that the daughter be financially savvy, and rewarded financially as much as boys for her work, not just “intellectually fulfilled,” and then I can support this.”
This is stupid. I’m an atheist and I can appreciate it for what it is. Witty and enduring in it’s own odd way. Stop being myopic.
Jeff commented on Apr 20 11 at 9:56 pmI’m a father, a Christian, and I have only sons (no daughters, unfortunately) — and I thought this was beautiful. It did not offend me, did not make me wonder at the author’s motives, did not make me feel in any way excluded or marginalized or trivialized. It’s just a beautiful prayer that any modern parent ought to be able to relate to.
Rosa commented on Apr 21 11 at 12:45 amOh god I’m lizzing..
mumbojumbo commented on Apr 21 11 at 2:34 amRelax Tina we are all going to die because the Mayan gods have ordered it.I pray every night that when 2012 comes along I have the strength to break into the local Ferrari dealership and drive off with a shiny red car.I pray that gas stations will still have fuel, and the roads not be littered with broken down pickup trucks.
Aradhna commented on Apr 21 11 at 6:00 amLovely! :)
Arieliondotcom commented on Apr 21 11 at 7:54 amSad that the commentaries degrade the beautiful sentiment. If you have to comment on another person’s concept of God and prayer, the first thing you must realize is that you are not God. Now what was Tina saying about idiots on the internet?
blieverdom commented on Apr 21 11 at 7:58 amRun? Hell, I won’t even walk. In fact, I’ll just avoid the bookstore all together. Thanks to the internet, I was able to read her prayer on-line in this little story and that’s enough of her book for me.
Wydsyth commented on Apr 21 11 at 8:19 amThere is both wisdom and wit here in uncommon degree. My prayer is that we all have a long future yet with this remarkable woman.
Timx13 commented on Apr 21 11 at 8:58 amMan, after reading some of the comments I might join the “break the Internet forever” prayer circle as well.
itsmeme commented on Apr 21 11 at 10:21 am@TIMX14 I too will support the “break the internet forever” as well lol
Love it for what it is. Her take on her life, and what she doesn’t want her daughter to go through….knowing full well whatever happens (even if she gets a Pooh tattoo) she will love her anyway.
George Brown commented on Apr 21 11 at 10:21 amY’all should lighten up. What you’ve just read is personal and we should

and all you’ve done to Sarah Palin is make her a celebrity.
Wow... commented on Apr 21 11 at 10:22 amI wouldn’t make this prayer for my daughter… Except maybe the protection part and diaper-changing part.

ThatGuyThatTalksTooMuch commented on Apr 21 11 at 10:36 amTina is brilliant. Anyone who’s criticizing her excerpt is not, or their opinion would be published in a journal or book like Tina’s instead of as a comment about Tina on a website. This is her personal desire for how she would like her daughter to be. So you religious freaks should probably go to another site and stick your nose in someone else’s prayer. By the way, who is anyone to tell anyone else how to pray? Prayer to anyone’s god (note the lower case “g”) is personal, and people should butt-out. And to whoever brought up Palin, get over it. All political figures are impersonated on SNL, including George Washington, who was brought back from the past and killed everyone in the room. I don’t hear anyone complaining about that. I like Palin, and I love Tina’s impression of Palin because I can take a joke. If you watched the SNL that Palin was on, you’d know she can take a joke, too. Best line ever: “I can see Russia from my house!”
An Adult commented on Apr 21 11 at 10:39 amI thank Thee Lord my mother was not a sexually preoccupied nutter like Tina Fey.
Mike commented on Apr 21 11 at 10:47 amShe forgot about wanting her child to be as vindictive as she is with people and ideas that contradict her own – i.e. Palin, et. al.
I agree that her daughter should not be a pathetic actress on a marginal tv show such as hers.
Mike Collins commented on Apr 21 11 at 11:11 amBrilliant, challenging, heartfelt, funny and deja vu for a father of three daughters now in their twenties. I hope I am around to read Tina’s prayer for her first grandchild some day.
oldVolvo commented on Apr 21 11 at 11:21 amI am a father of two sons. May they, in their future, with a sudden weekend quest for all things retro of their parent’s generation, discover the humor and humanity of Tina Fey.
Cindy commented on Apr 21 11 at 11:37 amSheesh…uh, who cares if you think that God shouldn’t be included and if a god IS, then it should be gender neutral. Good grief. This is HER prayer for HER child she can do it ANY was the damn well pleases. Idiots!
john r commented on Apr 21 11 at 11:37 amGREAT post. LOL, just fantastic and what was needed after a brutal week in this pollen-infested H3LL of a national capital…
Someone help me though, how is it that people without a sense of humor or wit would comment on a humorous and witty “prayer”?
Brain commented on Apr 21 11 at 11:52 amI love this.
And to all the pc types who would change this or change that, this wasnt written for your daughter. It was for hers. Im willing to bet you (the collective you) do not have a prayer or wish for your daughters because youre too busy being “progressive”. Go smoke another joint, blog another femtard post, and be socially pc. God speed. I love this, quite similar to the one i wish for my little girl
James commented on Apr 21 11 at 11:54 amEnjoyed the “prayer” by Tina and was impressed with the comments by fathers. There’s a related song called Daddy’s Little Girl by Peter Love at OnStage that I think both mothers and fathers will love when they hear it.
Tom Mariner commented on Apr 21 11 at 12:17 pmThank God for people like Ms. Fey. (OK, Tina — anyone who can make us laugh and think at the same time deserves to be called by her first name like a trusted friend.) I am instantly jealous of such amazing talent and thankful that my country can produce thinkers and doers like her.
You just know that prayer just gushed out of her, onto a screen and was printed in her book with not a character edited. When I grow up, I want to be her … and I’m a guy with a lot of years on his frame.
myndy. commented on Apr 21 11 at 12:22 pmWonderful. Can’t wait to read your book.

Big B commented on Apr 21 11 at 12:54 pmMeh. Decent prayer for Tina Fey, I suppose, but it’s hardly enough to make me want to get my own copy to “see what other genius she dishes out. ” After listing things she DOESN’T want her daughter to do, she *almost* gets it right, “What would that be, Lord? Architecture? Midwifery? Golf course design? I’m asking You, because if I knew, I’d be doing it, ” Surprise for her, but it may be Acting. Or Finance.
Aurelia commented on Apr 21 11 at 1:22 pmI have three sons, no daughters, but this still made me tear up. It’s perfect and true. I just want them to grow up safe and sane, so they can have careers and families of their own someday!

Tina, it’s great, it’s wonderful that you’re having a child. I hope all the things in this segment come true for the both of you… But you are just another mother. Yes, you have the means to get what you want to say out there, maybe even add a bit of humor to entreat those who are your fans. Your comments are witty and I even have to admit that you did a great job on that date movie.. Before that, I never really followed you and not much since…
Thnx for your insight and humor,.. but just remember, though this is a special time I don’t with to rain on for you, you’re just one of many mothers who feel the same.
sage_won commented on Apr 21 11 at 1:45 pmGod bless the free spirit of ANYONE who can publicly offer these desires for a child! I would like to believe that we can all understand the truths and subtle nuances of this prayer. Please don’t trivialize this with bickering, or some self serving agenda. Smile, cry, laugh and ponder. And pray any way you want to for your sons and daughters; for our country’s future belongs to them…
TJ Mac commented on Apr 21 11 at 1:49 pmThank you God for blessing me with a boy.

WhyLiveHere commented on Apr 21 11 at 2:38 pmIt’s really tough being a religious man in America. I tend to monitor the news to manage my portfolio. More and more do I run into stories featuring the depravity of this once great country. As usual, using the form of a prayer to spout nonsense. It just makes me sad.
While religious, I’m also very much a pragmatist. I know there is nothing I can do to change the course of this country; I will not even try. The only reasonable solution is to leave. So, I am. I have countdown going for the date when I have finally fulfilled all my responsibilities and can finally leave: I have 985 days, 5hrs, 26min, and 50sec. until the day I can finally leave once and for all.
I too have written a prayer for the day I leave. I plan on buying a dozen roses and visiting the Statue of Liberty one last time before I go. I will leave the roses and poem at Lady Liberties feat. It is the following:
God Bless America;
If only I could save you,
Lovely Lady Liberty and Beautiful Blind Justice.
Oh, have recent men and women so abused you;
my love for you, you do not trust nor take.
So I leave of you with sadness and resentment;
Sadness knowing I must leave you;
Resentment knowing with me you would not go.
America, I love you more than you will ever know.
I’m sorry I must leave you.
To another country I must go.-Anonymous

It made me cry. Particularly the last part. Ms. Fey is so right, so to the point.
I had a baby girl two months ago. My mom passed away six months ago. I cannot stop thinking of her and of the baby. And God, how do I wish I could grab the phone and call her to thank her for all she did for me – all that I hope to be able to do for my daughter..

You are really two faced
I really hope no one attacks your children like you do others

I loved it.

All mothers (and all women, for that matter, for their potential to give birth and be mothers regardless) are goddesses. All women – everywhere. Thank you, Lord, for bestowing the physical design and universal condition of motherhood upon all women.

my2cents2 commented on Apr 22 11 at 12:40 pmTouching prayer. Don’t mess with a mama bear when it comes to her cubs no matter what gender. But Tina is not the first person to be a mother and protective and all that. And as one reader commented, I hope no one picks on her daughter like Tina did Sarah’s children. That was not funny, or classy.

Spurls commented on Apr 23 11 at 6:38 amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh. religion. stop it, any of you who mention religion. this is a joke. it has nothing to do with religion. it’s funny, well-written and touches on many aspects that i’m sure many people have come across bringing up children. i don’t even have children and i find it funny on face value. just keep religion out of it, she used it as vehicle. sorry, i just can’t stand it when religion ruins a funny joke with it’s over-sensitivity. and for all you religious nuts out there, bear in mind she could have ended it with “and lastly god, please stop existing so my children will not be subjected to war, ignorance, child abuse….” IT’S A JOKE. GROW UP
Mom to 5 daughters commented on Apr 23 11 at 9:05 amI never took credit for the good things my children did or blame for the bad. Parents do the best they can at the time. If comments offend you – that is why there is a ‘delete’ button on a computer and an on/off switch on electronics. Be grateful we live in a country that gives us the freedom to read, write, express our opinions, worship our God and elect our leaders. Honor our country and the people who have died to protect our freedom. MOM of 5 daughters, 4 grandaughters
Vivian Salazar commented on Apr 23 11 at 11:36 amWhat a loving, tender, and familiar voice Tina Fey weaves in her Prayer for a Daughter. I’m stricken by her authenticity and unfettered honesty in addressing the Lord. Tina shows us that she’s not afraid of being transparent, which takes a lot of courage if you’re in the critical public eye. I admire that. She also shows us that she “gets it”. God is our Father, a daddy, if you will. He looks upon us as his children–all of us. Tina has shared with us a glimpse of her relationship with God. Her prayer is a beautiful and true example of communing with the Lord.
Unlike Spurl and Missy, Tina shows us that her prayer is not about “religion” (the road to Hell is paved by religion), but it’s about having a relationship with God, just as you would with any other friend.
To Missy: You don’t really know the God of Christianity or you wouldn’t have said what you did. I suggest you read the Bible and get to know him really well before you take the liberty of speaking for Him.
To Spurl: You don’t know God either, although I hope one day you will be willing to take off your blinders and take down your fences so you can let go of your bitterness and let Love flow in. You are confusing relationship with “religion”. Religions and cults are a vortex of distorted scripture meant to destroy your eternal soul. Relationship with God is an intimate, loving, and safe haven with a real friend. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be rough patches in your relationship with God. Then again, he’s not exactly crazy about the things you do either. So you see, it’s a give and take just like in any other friendship. I hope someday you’ll “get it”. I’ll look for you in Heaven. Hope you’ll be there.
Janice commented on Apr 23 11 at 11:46 amWhy is Tina not mocking Sarah Palin now? Why the silence?
She was so selective, targeting Palin viciously and utterly destroyed
her. Tina did a great job at that. The truth is Palin never said she can
see Russia from her house. That was a lie and she should have been held
accountable for that vicious attack in the name of Saturday live.
This is what was said during the interview.Charlie Gibson ask ” What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?”
Sarah Palin answered ” They’re our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska. ”
Tina should continue mocking Sarah Palin. There are lots of material out there and
she can manipulates, change the contents to her heart’s desires, and substitute
them with her lies.
Tina Fey should be praying for Sarah Palin, A must read for anyone who wishes
to destroy another’s person’s name, character and career.

Why does intelligent comedy wrapped around something obviously sincere to Tina and so many other women draw all the selfish crazy religious people who feel the need to impose their understanding and meaning of religion on other people.
There is no such thing as the one and only god. Everyone has their own definition of god and that should be good enough. Your childish and primitive opinions are not welcome in any public forums.
Be a good person. Stop being so depressing and jealous!
Your god is not better than mine. Deal with it!

Tina needs to slap a few of these opiners. Now, log off and go outside and play.

becca commented on Apr 25 11 at 12:25 amI laughed…I loved it! Yes people lighten up and appreciate that it was HER PRAYER to HER DAUGHTER! Well said and so in touch with how a lot of mothers/parents feel:) after reading some of these comments I’m all for the internet breaking too because maybe it would keep people from reading things like this and taking /judging them way too seriously! <3 Tina!!! She rocks!
Andrea commented on Apr 25 11 at 11:20 amI love it. I so totally LOVE Tina. :-) It was excellent.
Betsy commented on Apr 25 11 at 10:51 pmAmen … And thank you …
Sneaky P commented on Apr 28 11 at 3:03 amI can’t believe how many stupid fucking people actually thought this would have anything to do with any sort of religion. You deserve to be offended if you came in to the conversation ass first.

As fir Sara palin I think she’s a hypocrite and full of herself and just a little bit crazy, and that’s just an opinion-doesn’t make me right doesn’t make me wrong, just makes me me
Kir commented on May 09 11 at 10:07 amI loved this so much when Nancy first posted it that I printed it and put it up in my cubicle (it’s like my shrine to all of you my favorite bloggers) …may all our prayers silly and not, be answered so that our children know how much we love them (and how we do not need to be embarressed by their evil behavior)
thanks for sharing!!!
6TailLights commented on May 09 11 at 8:49 pmI have tattoos, I married a drummer, and I work in finance. I’m also very happy. Wouldn’t any mother’s fondest wish be for their daughter to be happy? My prayer for mothers is for them to be less judgmental. Happy Mother’s Day anyway!
Burn commented on Oct 05 11 at 10:34 amFake.
Everyone knows that Tina is godless.
You so silly.
