Sunday, March 20th marked the vernal equinox for 2011, and which most people in the U.S. refer to as the first day of spring.
An equinox occurs twice every year, in March and September, when the center of the Sun crosses directly over the Earth’s equator. To many countries and cultures around the globe, an equinox is considered a special occasion.
What is the vernal equinox and what is so interesting about it? On March 20th, both day and night are just about identical in length – 12 hours each – at the equatorial plane.
