Corned Beef And Cabbage And Irish-Born Celebrities Who Will Enjoy It Tomorrow

Most of us will spend St. Patrick’s day tomorrow looking for shamrocks and wearing green to avoid getting pinched. And if you are a fan of St. Patrick’s Day like I am, chances are you will probably be chowing down on corned beef and cabbage; the dish signifies the holiday like no other.
While corned beef and cabbage is definitely one of the first things people think of when celebrating St. Paddy’s Day, it’s not exactly an Irish tradition.
The Irish did in fact cook corned beef and cabbage, but it wasn’t actually beef, it was bacon. So the term should be ham and cabbage, because that was a yearly tradition. The tradition may have changed for Irish-Americans who moved to America where more beef is eaten.
Why is it called “corned” beef? It’s called corned beef because of its salted nature. It comes from adding “corns” of salt to the beef while it’s slow cooked.
