Fat Tuesday 2011: What is Mardi Gras, Celebs Who Love to Celebrate
Fat Tuesday 2011 is here! Fat Tuesday is the biggest day of Mardi Gras! Celebs who love to celebrate Mardi Gras include Harry Connick Jr, Nicolas Cage, Laurence Fishburne and many more. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are big fans of the Big Easy, so I’m sure they are celebrating Fat Tuesday today!
Ash Wednesday begins Lent for Christians. But in the time period before the start of Lent, the idea is to party like it’s 1999, and that is called Mardi Gras.
Harry Connick Jr celebrated Mardi Gras in New Orleans this year. Harry and Laurence Fishburne rode in the New Orleans Mardi Gras parade, along with Delta Burke and Gerald McRaney.
It seems Nicolas Cage needed a police escort because he celebrated Mardi Gras a little too hard!
When is Mardi Gras?
While Mardi Gras celebrations can last from the period between the Epiphany and Ash Wednesday, the official day falls on the last Tuesday before the beginning of Lent, also known as Fat Tuesday.
How do you celebrate Mardi Gras?
In anticipation of fasting that accompanies Lent, it is traditional to go all out on Fat Tuesday, eating, drinking and generally having as good a time before Lent begins.
Who celebrates Mardi Gras?
Catholics in countries across Europe and the Americas celebrate Mardi Gras. Over the last few years, more Protestant churches have begun daubing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful on Ash Wednesday and fasting, long familiar to Catholics as a Lenten fact of life, is increasingly popular with evangelical Christians striving for spiritual awakening.
The Mardi Gras celebration is known as Carnival in several countries. Mardi Gras parades, parties and general displays of excess can be found on the days leading up to Ash Wednesday.
