Dave Duerson: Remembering a Football Great
Dave Duerson, a key player on the 1985 Super Bowl champion team the Chicago Bears, was found dead Thursday night in his Miami home. Duerson was 50 years old. As of this time, Miami Dade County coroner has not stated a cause of death.
His former wife, Alicia Duerson, told NBC Chicago: “Our family asks that you please remember Dave as a good, kind and caring man. He loved and cherished his family and friends and was extremely proud of his beloved Notre Dame and … Chicago Bears. Please keep Dave and our family in your prayers.” He is survived by four children.
Duerson grew up in Munice, Indiana – he was a four year starter for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and a two-time All American. He was selected by the Bears in the third round of the 1983 draft. He became a starter with the Bears in 1985, and played in the first of four consecutive Pro Bowls that year. In 1987, he was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.
Duerson was released from the Bears after completing the 1989 season. He then signed with the Giants and won a Super Bowl in his only season with the team. He completed his career after playing three seasons for the Phoenix Cardinals.
The Bears released a statement Friday saying they were “stunned and saddened” by the news and called Duerson “a great contributor to our team and the Chicago community.” It went on to say that “Today is a difficult day for all of us who loved Dave. We’ll miss him. Our prayers are with his family.”
Duerson filed for divorce from his wife after 24 years of marriage in 2007. In 2006, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery. Because of the incident, Duerson lost his trustee position with Notre Dame University.
Our condolences go out to Duerson’s family.
