Groundhog Day Video: Did Punxsutawney Phil See His Shadow?
For 125 years, the entire country has watched Punxsutawney Phil crawl out of his burrow on Feb. 2, while waiting to find out if spring will come early this year, or if we’ll be stuck with winter for six more weeks.
If Phil doesn’t see his shadow, it means we’ve got only two more weeks of winter to get through (hooray!), but if he does see his shadow, we’ll have at least six more weeks of wintery cold (boo!).So where does this idea come from?
The Groundhog Day celebration derives from a German superstition that says if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2 (the Christian holiday of Candlemas), winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow was seen, legend said spring would come early.
According to the National Climatic Data Center, Phil is correct only about 40 percent of the time. It doesn’t matter. The country still believes in Phil.
This morning, Phil climbed out of his burrow…and he did NOT see his shadow! That means that Spring is a mere two weeks away!
Watch Punxsutawney Phil as he climbs out and doesn’t see his shadow.
Do you wait for Phil’s prediction every year? Are you happy to hear that spring (may) be coming early this year? I am! It’s been a long enough winter, and I’m ready for springtime!
