George Clooney Beats Malaria, Puts Spotlight on ‘Not On My Watch’
George Clooney has beaten a second bout of Malaria. The actor made a trip in early January to the Sudan and Clooney contracted Malaria, which can be life threatening if it is not treated properly.
A representative for George Clooney said that the actor “contracted the disease during a trip in the first week of January” on a visit to the African nation with Not On Our Watch.
Not On Our Watch is a humanitarian aid organization that Clooney founded with Ocean’s Eleven co-stars Don Cheadle, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt, and others.
The actor has been to the Sudan frequently as a way to shine the media spotlight on the troubled area, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The purpose of Not On Our Watch is to “focus global attention and resources towards putting an end to mass atrocities around the world. Drawing upon the powerful voices of artists, activists, and cultural leaders, Not On Our Watch generates lifesaving humanitarian assistance and protection for the vulnerable, marginalized, and displaced…Not On Our Watch is committed to stopping mass atrocities and giving voice to their victims.”
George Clooney wanted to turn the focus off his bout with malaria and focus on the problem in the Sudan. The actor said in a statement, “This illustrates how with proper medication, the most lethal condition in Africa, can be reduced to a bad ten days instead of a death sentence.”
