Kiran Rao’s Dhobi Ghat takes a look at four different characters in this dynamic city. Interestingly, instead of opting for the usual candy floss entertainer in her directorial debut, Kiran chooses to make a film that’s very real and also that comes across as personal memoirs that have found a place on celluloid.
ABCNews.in: The movie succeeds in connecting with the audience and audiences by and large are of the opinion that the movie will be a cult and prove to be a crafted piece of cinema. The movie- goers are impressed by the unusual treatment given to the characters as the fragments of the characters’ experience — seen through a raw video diary, black and white photographic images and painting — form a portrait of Mumbai and its people bound together as they journey through longing, loneliness, loss and love, have pulled their senses off.
Ganpati News: In terms of being a cinematic portrait, Dhobi Ghat is vibrant and brings in the new wave of cinema which is individualistic and independent. Tushar Kanti Ray who is managing the cinematic score of the movie has done a fine job while Gustavo Santaolalla has given a captivating background score. The verdict for Prateik Babbar is also a good one as the actor speaks the slum lingo with an equal ease as he mouths love words to his girl.

Art cinema trying to gain acceptance in commercial zone, though I think that is not the only aim of the producer in this flick. It is simply about creating good and real cinema in a hope that audience matures into accepting such frames commercially in all parts of India, not just few halls in metros. It is far away from reaching such a mile stone just yet, but there is always that first pebble in the jug for a thirsty crow. And for that you have to give into Kiran and team. Hope the thirst increases and producers keep raising the bar or water level, shall I say? Nice going. Bring back good cinema.
