Sargent Shriver: Maria Shriver’s Father Battled Alzheimer’s,Shriver Family Alzheimer’s Advocacy
Sargent Shriver, father of Maria Shriver passed away after battling Alzheimer’s disease since 2003. Sargent Shriver was the first director of the Peace Corps, established by JFK in 1961. The Shriver family brought Alzheimer’s to the forefront and the Shriver family became strong advocates for those battling the disease, especially daughter Maria Shriver.
Former first lady of California, Maria Shriver wrote a book about Alzheimer’s called What’s Happening to Grandpa? The book explained the disease to kids, with all proceeds from the book going to the Alzheimer’s Association.Maria Shriver also produced the HBO’s 2009 documentary series, The Alzheimer’s Project. According to the Baltimore Sun, daughter Maria also published The Shriver Report: A Woman’s Nation Takes on Alzheimer’s. The Baltimore Sun reports “The 2010 study details the $300 billion-a-year impact the illness is having on the nation, and especially on women, who constitute 65 percent of its victims, and 60 percent of caregivers.”
The family has had a very tough year with the death of Eunice Shriver in August 2009 followed by death Ted Kennedy, just a few weeks later.
