Martin Luther King Day: Honoring a great leader

Have your kids asked why we celebrate Martin Luther King Day? Here’s a quick primer on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and why we celebrate it, including a link to his famed “I Have A Dream” speech and why we celebrate this day in particular. It’s the second federal holiday of the year, following New Year’s Day. Read on for more about Martin Luther King.

One of the most famous Martin Luther King quotes is, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” That’s the central question of MLK Day, when people are encouraged to provide service in their communities to honor Dr. King’s legacy. On Martin Luther King Day 2011, Jan. 17, people are being encouraged to commit to doing 25 actions for the community through the year.

This is the 25 anniversary of Martin Luther King Day as a federal holiday. Dr. King was assassinated on April  4, 1968, on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn.

The day is observed on the third Monday in January each year; Dr. King’s birthday was Jan. 15.
