On Tuesday ESPN announcer Ron Franklin was fired in reaction to making not just making derogatory but sexist comments to fellow ESPN reporter Jeannine Edwards.

Initially he was just pulled from announcing the football game on Saturday, but after calling Jeanne Edwards not just “sweet cakes” but an “a-hole,” ESPN took the bold move to fire him. But was that a overreaction to his very questionable way of addressing a co-worker?

After the events took place, he did apologize for his remarks saying, “I said some things I shouldn’t have, and I’m sorry,” Franklin said in a statement issued by ESPN. “I deserved to be taken off the Fiesta Bowl.”

But it wasn’t just the Fiesta Bowl at stake, it was his entire career.

ESPN said about the events over the weekend,  “We made a late play-by-play change to the Fiesta Bowl radio team. We’re not going to get into specifics other than to say adhering to our personal conduct policies and showing respect for colleagues are of the utmost importance to our company and we take them extremely seriously.”

Do you think he should have just been suspended or maybe demoted? Or do you think being fired was an appropriate action by ESPN? But at least it’s a good lesson for the kids! Make sure to treat everyone with respect!

This was by far too harsh. Co workers routinely have disagreements that sometimes lead to vulgarity. This is a prime example of “political correctness” ruining a career.

this network has long been a joke.yes what franklin said was wrong.but to throw him away after 25 years of loyal service?this is a disgrace.how about tirico fondling fellow employees or scott asking cheerleaders what time is the booty call?Franklins attitude towards this woman who by the way has zero talent is the same attitude most male sports tv watchers have about female broadcasters.they dont belong.

He was warned previously–he is 69 and obviously has not adjusted to the times.

Then, when she objected to his demeaning attitude – he followed it up by calling her something worse.

BTW, SHE was NOT the person who told on him….that was another MAN in the room.

I feel sorry for him in that it has become widespred public knowledge – but his BUSINESS is speaking….so he should sure as heck know what to say and what to not say.

It is still pretty sad that men are taking up for this behavior in 2011…..obviously, some parents did a poor job teaching their kids to respect EVERYBODY.

It would be one thing if this was at a bar – but it was in the workplace and ridiculous.

I am a female. I do not understand what was sexist. I think that Jeanne was RUDE to butt into the conversation the men were having. Baby is always used loosely. She got bit@&% about it and he reacted and used the adjective a&# hole. She was being one by being rude. They were not talking to her. Men are afraid to include women in their conversations for fear of saying the wrong thing because of this type of accusations. She will probably sue next. I say, go bake a cake and mind her own conversations and business.
