Rip Torn Pleads Guilty: Why He Won’t See Jail Time for Trying to Break Into Bank with Gun
Rip Torn - the Emmy winning actor and dad to six – plead guilty to charges that he tried to break into a bank while possessing a loaded gun.
The Texan born character actor is known not just for his whimsical name but for his roles on The Larry Sanders Show, his Academy Award nominated role in the film Cross Creek and his Tony Award nominated performance in Sweet Bird of Youth. But there is a dark side to Rip Torn. He has battled with issues with alcohol for quite a while now. He had been arrested three times for drunk driving. But Rip Torn made headlines earlier this year when he attempted to break into a closed bank in Lakeville, Connecticut…He was charged with “carrying a firearm without a permit, carrying a firearm while intoxicated, first-degree burglary, second-degree criminal trespassing and third-degree criminal mischief.” But he won’t see jail time. Why?
The police believe that the very intoxicated Rip Torn believed that the bank was his home and he was just trying to get into his house. Rip Torn’s lawyer stated to the judge that Rip Torn needed help for alcohol abuse, he was released on $100,000 bail and would start alcohol abuse treatment.
Back in August the judge denied special probation that would have cleared the charges and said that possession of a loaded weapon while intoxicated carries a minimum 1-year sentence. But Rip Torn was lucky. He wont see any jail time at all. Instead he will have a two-and-half year suspended sentence and three years of probation. Also he will have a ban on possessing guns as well as random drug and alcohol tests.
Do you think he got special “star” treatment?
