Heisman Trophy: Should Cam Newton win the Heisman despite dad's misdeeds?
Everyone agrees that, based on on-field talent alone, the Heisman Trophy should go to Cam Newton. He’s clearly the most talented player in the country, and he plays for the best team in the country, which is usually enough to guarantee a trophy. But his dad, Cecil Newton, allegedly tried to get schools to pay for his son’s services, asking for thousands of dollars in return for Cam Newton’s commitment. In the wake of last summer’s Reggie Bush fiasco, when the former USC player was forced to return his Heisman for NCAA violations, should Cam Newton win the Heisman Trophy?
Some sportswriters who have Heisman ballots say no. They argue that while the Cam Newton investigation is ongoing, and nothing has been proven against the player himself, he should be punished for his father’s sins. And besides, who believes Cam knew nothing about this? We don’t want another Bush situation, where the winner has to give back the trophy.
Others say it’s not fair to punish the country’s best player for his father’s misdeeds, Bush’s situation notwithstanding.
