Facebook Cartoon Profile Pics Support Kids Or Prey On Them?

Facebook cartoon profile pics have taken over Facebook the past few days. Millions of Facebook users are changing their profile pics to pictures of cartoon characters, and many people are asking, “Why is everyone’s Facebook picture a cartoon?” Facebook cartoon profile pictures are everywhere in the news.

As the Facebook cartoon profile pic meme has gained more and more interest, so have the questions surrounding it. Is the Facebook cartoon campaign supporting kids, or preying on them?

While the Facebook cartoon profile pictures are supposed to be a way to stand up to child abuse and combat child violence, new reports are surfacing that the Facebook campaign may be a hoax set up by people who want to prey on innocent children.

The theory behind the hoax is that children will be more willing to accept friend requests from someone who has a facebook cartoon profile picture, therefore making kids more susceptible to online child predators.

Which theory do you believe about the Facebook cartoon profile pic frenzy? Is the Facebook campaign supporting kids, or preying on them?

Total bullshit.

I do as I please

Shaco commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:52 pm

Those who may want to prey on children can already change their pics to cartoon characters without having to asking others to change theirs too. I don’t see the reasoning behind. And with the campaign ending today, Dec 6., what’s the point?

lol i put mine as michael jackson

Mason commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:57 pm

Kids shouldn’t have a Facebook profile to begin with, and this originated with a charitable organization. Do your research before you spread rumors….

eddie commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:59 pm

If everyones pic is a cartoon, how do the predators find the children in the first place. The hard of thinking yet again hear the word paedophile and panic without thinking things through – someone started that rumour just to take away other peoples enjoyment and the thought that they might be doing some good.

Steve Powers commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:02 pm

parents need to watch what their child does on FB. My kid is 13 & he does NOt accept friend requests from anyone he does not know & always tells me. I think if more parents were like me, we wouldnt have to worry as much about predators on FB!! I think its fun to have so many ppl changing their profile pix to a cartoon!!!

Shoshi commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:05 pm

with everyones pic changed they can use a popular name like matt smith and send out a bunch of request whoever knows a matt smith may accept without any questions if everyones is a cartoon.

Chgirlygirl commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:07 pm

Facebook was orginally designed for college students.. Requiring a .edu, or non gmail account.

Why did they take this precaution off?

Facebook should be for those over 18 years and older, and myspace can keep the kiddies.

Nic commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:09 pm

Changing your profile pic to a cartoon is not going to stop child abuse. Just shows people have too much time on there hands. If you want to really help then find a real group to contribute to or find some other form of supporting abused children.

Eve commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:10 pm

“Children” should not be on Facebook!

Jackieo commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:27 pm

My daughter was beaten up, bullied & abused n school. This campaign no matter what your take on it is, is a show of solidarity against violence & abuse against children! Duplicity can b found n every element including this article!

Helen Price commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:34 pm

A pervert would all ready have a profile pic that would appeal to a child. So really what difference does

Anna commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:35 pm

Child Abuse Awareness(This is the name of the organization, look it up)
Change your default pic to a cartoon character/show and invite ur friends to do the same! There should be no human faces on FB..This is a campaign to STOP violence against children!! Do this until Monday, December 6th!!!Start on Thursday (this is What they had posted.)

Dee Dee commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:35 pm

It make if a bunch of people have cartoon characters as profile pics?

Anna commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:37 pm

Children shouldn’t be on facebook… and if they are, their parents should be closely monitoring what information they post and who they are accepting/requesting as friends.

Jess commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:42 pm

a cartoon profile pic will not prevent child abuse, and if a pediphile wants to get at a child thru FB he can put a childs pic as his profile pic. or just use a cartoon pic without involving all of fb whats the point in doing that

jewel Young commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:43 pm

I also agree with some of you.. My kids do not have a facebook or a myspace page.. I do not feel children should be allowed to be involved in any of those sites

Angela commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:53 pm

I agree it’s stupid to just now make this assumption. And like someone said why would a kid have a facebook page anyway? That’s just like telling the young moms to change their profile picture to something else rather than having a picture of their 6 year old son waving to his mom as he gets on the bus for the first time. Not any different really. I say just let it be. People are going to do what they want on facebook whether or not people agree with the way things are suppose to be. Like with the whole purse thing I like it on the table or by the front door that’s just an invite for a robber to know where your purse is…am I right??

Allysha commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:54 pm

Not to be the voice of reason here, as I rarely am, but there are many of us that are on the games of Facebook and of Zynga and accept requests from anyone. Once they are friends with you, regardless of the fact that they may or may not be playing these games too, they have total access to your little girl’s photos. And you thought that one pedophile down the street was bad, now you have given thousand’s the right to peruse through you private photos.

Louis Nelsen commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:55 pm

I agree with Eddie…

Peggy commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:56 pm

I think some of you are missing the point. Of course changing your profile pic will not stop child abuse. The campaign is to raise awareness about child abuse. People tend to overthink the simplest things sometimes. Just don’t participate if you don’t want to. Not that big of a deal. Geesh.

Taylor Mill commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:59 pm

I took the whole thing as it is supposed to raise awareness for child abuse..no, changing your pic is not going to stop it..but makes people think about it a bit more. as far as the person that said we “have too much time on our hands”…it takes about 2 seconds to change a profile pic…and what does anyones spare time have to do with anything???

bev commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:01 pm

Seriously? And then you link your own blog as proof of your little conspiracy. This is ridiculous shit.

Seth commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:04 pm

Oh yea it is that time of year the child abuser had their annual Pedophile meeting to work on new ways to lure children, give me a break

Warren commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:17 pm

I don’t think Facebook should only be for people over 18, but I do think that if a kid is attracted to a cartoon profile picture, then they’re too young to have a Facebook.
Also, if you have a cartoon picture as your profile, you shouldn’t have a Facebook, but then there are those really weird adults with the anime profile pictures, so…
But if it is to help support Child Abuse, then that’s really great.

Oh, and if you see ANYONE still using MySpace, please remind them it’s 2010.

Marina commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:19 pm

Just like 2 add your 2cents on this question??? Why do U have 2 provide an email address?? Cmon this is a silly way 2 express yourself. Just when the celebrity look-a-like phase hit FB, nothign crude came out of that? Beside if u are an adult, why would U have children as ur friends anyway??? U can make FB the means of all evil if u want 2, just use common sense!

T commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:20 pm

*help support Child Abuse AWARENESS.

Marina commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:21 pm

I believe the theory that says you are a total retard.

buck commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:24 pm

Anyone under the age of 16 shouldn’t be allowed to add people without their parent’s permission

AJ commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:30 pm

How could it be a hoax, when only awareness is the end result. Child abuse will always be there, but awareness is the name of the game in helping it end.
If one child is made aware, or one neighbor…it has been worth our time. I think just… to show these creeps we should keep it going. I will vow to keep my cartoon character as my FB until Friday if the awareness can continue.

scott commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:33 pm

this is backfiring on these sick f****that started the hoax s***. People are now vowing to keep their cartoon characters on FB as a continuing to awareness of this.

scott commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:48 pm

What would be the point, the pedophiles can change their picture to whatever they want so why would they need the rest of the world to change theirs?
And if this were true they wouldnt set an end date.
AND Children shouldnt have a facebook!!

Kourtney commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:54 pm

Now that I think about it, there were two different reasons for the cartoon character profile picture; one to bring back childhood memories from the 15th to the 30th of November, and the Child Abuse Awareness.
So what’s the deal with that? Maybe it was a hoax. It could have still raised awareness, though, so good.

Marina commented on Dec 05 10 at 11:10 pm

just because you change your picture doesnt grant them permission to view your profile.

Unknown commented on Dec 05 10 at 11:21 pm

i love my strawberry shortcake i think it was aneat way to say stop child abuse of course it is not going to stop it it is just a way to say you don’t approve!! if a sick person come up with it that just goes to show how sick ppl are so watch see who your kids are talking to!!!

MISTY commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:30 am

This is total rubbish!!
I,along with many of my friends have enjoyed the change of profile pictures to the old favourite cartoon characters of our childhoods :-)
To say this would then entise youngsters to be lured into a Pheodophile’s friend’s list is rubbish! I have 2 kids under the age of 8 so they dont have access to any of this anyway but I do have cousin’s olders kids and teenager kids of friends of mine on my page, they have requested me because they KNOW me as a person! If your pc is being used by kids that do want a FB page etc, then measures should be taken to make sure their saftey is 100% certain, and there are MANY ways that can be done and the one, above all the others is DONT ACCEPT FRIEND REQUESTS FROM PEOPLE YOU DONT KNOW! simples! I LOVE my Bagpuss and even had friends putting cartoon characters up as profile pictures BEFORE this was started, so I maywell even keep him on there! :-)

Sally-Anne commented on Dec 06 10 at 7:05 am

=/ This is stupid…this also interfears with change your profile picture to a Pokemon Month for those of us who are pokemon fans and before anyones says “That’s another way to let a pedo find kids” it went on Last Year with NO problems what-so-ever.I do also have to agree Children under the ages of 13 really SHOULDN’T have a facebook..
