Cartoon Characters on Facebook: Is the Facebook Cartoon Campaign a Hoax?

Posted by ebrady on December 5th, 2010 at 6:30 pm

jetsons11 Cartoon Characters on Facebook: Is the Facebook Cartoon Campaign a Hoax?Cartoon characters have been showing up all over Facebook this week in a reported effort to raise awareness of violence against children.  Now as the campaign is nearing its end, rumors are swirling that the entire Facebook cartoon campaign may in fact be a complete hoax.

It all started out innocently enought with a few cartoon pictures popping up on friends profiles.  Then came the walls posts announcing that the cartoon characters were actually part of a campaign to help stop violence against children.

Is the Cartoon Character Campaign on Facebook a Hoax?

The messages themselves read something like, “In support of anti-child violence, change your Facebook profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood. Until Monday Dec. 6, there should be no human faces on Facebook, but an invasion of memories. Join the fight against CHILD ABUSE. Invite your friends to do the same.”

The catch is that nobody can really seem to pinpoint the origin of the campaign and that no non-profit organization is laying claim to the movement itself.

Now it appears that there is a counter-movement afoot attempting to stop the cartoon characters in their animated tracks.  The new messages that have started to appear claim, “ATTENTION! Just reported that the group that started the post about changing your profile picture to a cartoon character is actually a pedophiles group that is doing this because its easier to get accepted friend requests! Please re-post.”

Much like the original posts there seems to be little credence to the counter-campaign to stop the Facebook cartoons.  In reality having a cartoon character as your avatar would not make it easier to get accepted as a friend online.  While both campaigns are probably a hoax, the entire weekend of seeing all your childhood cartoon favs online has been a lot of fun for everyone!

It really ticks me off that people will do anything to stop everyone else from having a little fun.

Jay commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:07 pm

Of course it is. How can it change anything.
But its fun isn’t it?

Jen commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:11 pm

Even if it was a hoax, hopefully it shows just how many people are willing to show support for the NSPCC and other children’s charities and the good work they do!

Simone commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:20 pm

It may seem fun, but as they said no one can pinpoint a certain starter of either. Let us not forget what CNN reported about the Bra Color Status for Cancer Awareness:

“A spokeswoman for Facebook said ‘it’s not clear where or how the message started, calling it an example of a grass-roots movement beginning on the social networking site.’”

This is the same kind of thing, weather you support or don’t, change your profile picture or don’t; there will ALWAYS be someone starting or trying to tear down the “fun” or cause.

Just my point of view.

Bri commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:21 pm

ok im not getting none of this could some one explain

Yezsii commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:29 pm

It was fun for many. Sure beats 1/2 the crap people have posted the rest of the time. Refreshing to have a break from seeing people’s rear ends or no pic at all. LOL.

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:31 pm

to YEZSII Go to FB and read. If you have no FB freinds who followed and posted or reposted, you may not have seen it or changed your pic. Many of us did, and it has been harmless. Here is the link to the FB page:

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:34 pm

Whether or not it is true about the hoax or not it was a bit of fun that alot of people took part in.
I for one took part in changing my profile picture to a cartoon from my childhood, it also gave me and insight on how many people do want to do things to make this world a better place.

Total agreeance with Simone, I was extremely happy to see how much support facebook users showed on this matter.

BRODIE commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:34 pm

this annoys me that one person or group would actually do something like that.

Rainey commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:34 pm

NAMBLA is the only org self-proclaimed and now confirmed by law to be a Pedifile Org on FB. There are frekazoids everywhere and potentially under many ID’s. To accuse an anti-violence group or person without much other research or proof would be a mistake. :(

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:40 pm

wow this is sad… one because i did it and two from not believing my friend about this whole thing…

kimberly commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:44 pm

I don’t need a “reason” or “cause” to change my profile picture to a cartoon character. The idea to do it just for fun and to see it go viral is enough for an good FB fan . I could care less about doing it for any other reason.

Marti commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:48 pm

Fun, or no fun, good cause or not, if something comes out about it being linked to pedofiles, I am not going to support it. Listen to what you are saying? Don’t you care about children?? Stopping child abuse is a wonderful cause, but think about it? If everyone changed their profile picture it would make perfect sense that it would make it easier for pedofiles to prey on our children.

Susannah Peterman commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:54 pm

LOL You are all lemmings….fun? its stupid actually

jeff commented on Dec 05 10 at 7:54 pm

I posted a cartoon from my childhood days, as many of my friends. I would hope that what we did was truly to support the end of child abuse and not some campaign to support a pedophile’s wet dream. The thought is disturbing in itself, but the principal importance is that many of us DID change our pictures for what we believed was a good cause.

Mikki commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:00 pm

I agree it is kinda silly to consider this as a buzz kill for fun seekers on Facebook. Come on people pedophiles already have enough tricks to pray on our children. If there is even a shred of credibility to the rumor don’t we owe it to all our children to protect them in any way possible… Yes we do!! I will not support this type of campaign

Christina Seidle commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:09 pm

Missy – your link to the facebook Anti-child-violence-campaign proves to me that the changing your profile picture to a cartoon character was hijacked from just a fun thing to do to an awareness campaign (and now a peddo ring alert!). I changed my profile pic in early or mid-Nov when it was just for older folk to change to their favourite cartoon character from their youth. Nothing to do with either child abuse awareness (and absolutely nothing to do with paedophiles). Why do people have to come along and hijack something that is already happening to a political thing (even if it is for a good cause)!

portantwas commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:10 pm

I also saw posted: in addition to changing your profile picture to a cartoon character from your childhood, consider MAKING A DONATION TO A CHILD ADVOCACY AGENCY in your area and invite your friends to do the same… This will actually make a difference in how we stop violence against children.

Linda commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:10 pm

If it was hijacked or not from some other cause, everyone has the responsibility of protecting their OWN chilren’s computer access and habits ( which we cannot unfortunately do anything about as strangers.) If I am not and the zillion others who changed their pics sending minors sick messagees or sexual advancews, there was uh…clearly no harm done by us. It would take RECEIVING an offensive msg to be offended. LOL.

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:17 pm

and to portantwas, you may have come up with your anti-anti before the 8:10 PM the evening of the final night of the innocent cartoon pic posting…. LOL. oh well. :(

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:18 pm

I honestly believe that it has absolutely nothing to do with pedophile’s, and someone said earlier “pedophiles already have enough tricks to pray on our children”

why go to such great lengths to get something out about it being a child abuse cause when they could find something easier to do?

BRODIE commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:25 pm

Is this real or not? We have had a lot of fun putting our fav cartoons on this weekend. Does anyone know the truth here?

jan commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:29 pm

Well said, Brodie. Not to mention, having many people post pics of themselves as children would then be just as “evil” and dangerous, if viewing it as a much more common ploy of the sickos. LOL. Somethin’ else to gab about was all. It’s over in the morn. ( Except of course to those devil-worshipers LOL who always have their childhood pics or cartoon pics posted. God-forbid. Everyone will have something else to overreact about tomorrow, I’m sure. Always do!

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:31 pm

Seeing as I’ve only gotten 1 friend request this entire weekend, and I ignored it, cause I had no clue who the chick was, and I felt she was being very explicit, with her profile picture, I was like “well Facebook has creeps out there, people just need to find the Block button and use it wisely.” So this whole issue of it being a hoax might have been just a game, I found that having our childhood cartoon characters as our profile pictures might not have been towards something, but it shows that even if it wasn’t for a cause how fast people are able to do something, and have fun with it.

Bradley commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:32 pm

To Jan, if you go to the official site/link itslef, it’s CLEAR it is not itself from an “Organization” good or bad. Look at its SIZE? and supporter numbers? Yeah. Not an option. The rumors of it being a NAMBLA-like Organization and the NEWFOUND plea to post things AGAINST it is also spread from a person. An unfounded accusation. Good news? It’s THURSDAY night. :) Like it, hate it, respread rumors or not…it’s THURSDAY night. You had fun w YOUR pics as did many. No harm was intended or done. ;)

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:39 pm

To all: Before REspreading accusations that are horrendous, or jumping to ANY conclusions… try reseraching the sources and offical news reports. It’s not hard. We all have computers and hopefully know how to decipher websites and sources. Thinking of posting a “what will I look lie in 40 years ” photo in the morning, since this is OLD news now..LOL. See how many elderly I can target with my offensive sneaky pic. Ugh. Rite. LOL. Nite.

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:43 pm

If parents where smart they would filter what there children did on the internet, as my parents did too me.

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 8:57 pm

I happen to disagree with the statement above. It is a brilliant idea, for a pedophile to change their profile pic, to a cartoon character. Kids are intrigued by these figures. It shouldn’t take much common sense to figure that out. Therefore, I have removed my cartoon character as my profile picture.

Tina Roll commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:06 pm

I just don’t understand how changing a pic helped? No one donated money to a charity, no awareness was raised as everyone knows child abuse is a problem. If we want to raise awareness, why not be specific like post a cartoon to raise awareness for the drastic cuts affecting our schools art programs. Essentially, posting a pic only raises awareness and it does no benefit in raising awareness to a problem everyone is aware of.

Rick G commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:20 pm

Right on time, Tina. To each his own. It happens that each is removing them now anyway. It’s over, :) No fewer and no more molested kids to show for it! Yay!

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:21 pm

Gee folks it is F U N and nothing else, due to my nickname I always have a cartoon picture as my profile picture. I see it as what it is F U N and you get to see who liked what cartoon PERIOD that is all……………….

Micky commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:22 pm

So everyone is changing their profile pics back to the one’s with their children’s pictures. Makes sense, huh? Cause pedophiles wouldn’t prey on them.

Denise commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:24 pm

to Rick: Much agreed. Much like a silent protest, a passive “cause” to show agreement. There is no action. Just an agreed-upon statement for or against something. Common way of making statements for centuries. True , it DID nothing in a constructive way. LOL. Also not harmful or evil by the same token.

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:25 pm

Micky, you should stop contributing to confusing inncocent children, ALL YEAR LONG! No, I’m K-I-D-D-I-N-G, OBVIOUSO!

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:27 pm

i was in TOTAL support to help stop child abbuse but when i heard it was a way pedophiles were lurring kids to accept them as friends i changed my pic i think its a very sick and sad world we live in and lets face it pedophiles come up with some sick shit and kids FALL for it

deb commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:29 pm

To denise: That is a frickin’ riot. So true. See more of those the rest of the year. ( even from many of my actual friends. Bothersome if anything is, if thinking like a “pedo”.) Look out Monday morning.

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:29 pm

Take care. It’s been real. Real tiring. :)

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:32 pm

Parents need to keep their underage children off of facebook and if they are on there they should be monitored so that they don’t accept people they don’t know!

sharisse commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:33 pm

To me, it doesn’t matter. I’m not going to chance helping a pedofile get to a child. I changed my profile pic, & I alerted everyone on my friends list about it.

Mary commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:33 pm

Signed, Curious George.

missy commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:35 pm

wouldnt make it harder for a pedohile to find a child on facebook if everyone changed their pic to cartoon carater cause then they wouldnt be able to tell kids from adults

bennie commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:42 pm

I think its hilarious reading some of these post’s, i have made alot myself pointing out that “WE” have all changed our pic to a cartoon character out of fun, and pointing out child abuse cause, but as soon as someone mentioned PEDOPHILE you have all ran around going crazy saying omg it “MIGHT” be that.

Not one of us has HARD evidence of it being Yes, or NO!

MARY: you say you alerted people of it being a pedophile matter, where is your proof?

BRODIE commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:45 pm

BENNIE: you hit the nail on the head mate!!!

BRODIE commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:46 pm

It’s creating awareness for child abuse – changing your profile picture to a cartoon doesn’t assist pedophiles in making new child friends especially when EVERYONE is doing it. Geez. Focus on the kids. Don’t ignore a situation where you think a child is being abused. Report it.

Gina commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:50 pm

@Rick G… Actually, because of this campaign, regardless of it’s origins and whether it is attached to a known organization, I searched for charities online and found a reputable one and donated. Search for child shelters, child welfare, child abuse charities, etc. To say that this did no good is ignorant. Doing nothing is what does no good 100% of the time.

Jon S commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:53 pm

for everyone saying that it’s a good way for a pedofile to try and add your children…maybe your children shouldn’t have a facebook!

amanda commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:55 pm

The way I see it, it was equal to marching around with protest signs to get attention focused on something. It worked.
I enjoyed seeing my friends fave cartoons.

Wendy commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:58 pm

oh your fricking morons why would a cartoon picture attract kids. Why would you let your kid have a facebook Pedos would have it easier time in chatrooms forums and blogs. Im sorry if your kid has been picked up off the internet by a molester you have failed as a parent. There are blocks firewalls and sorts of technology to stop kids form viewing stuff they shouldnt. How about making your 13-16 year old daughters taking off the bikini pics/ bra pics and any other sexy picture. I honestly wish fb would go back to be for adults only.

morons commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:58 pm

If the cartoon character profile pic is a hoax it will have to be the most stupidist hoax I have ever heard of. Just because We change our pics to cartoon characters does not mean when the children except us or whatever they will not notice who we are. I don’t really understand where the pedophile comes in at. How is this helping a pedophile. It does not make any sense at all. It is not like the person changed every single pic in there profile and on their page to cartoon characters.I really just don’t understand how a whole bunch of people changing their profile pics can help a pedophile. What are they getting off on my muppet baby pic????

Annette commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:58 pm

Changing MY profile pic to a cartoon character is not going to help any pedophile. Changing my profile back to my regular pid of me is NOT going to STOP any pedophile. ANY PEDOPHILE can make a CARTOON CHARACTER THEIR PIC ANYTIME THEY WANT TO whether mine is a cartoon or not. So changing my profile pic from a cartoon character to my own pic or a pic of spaghetti and meatballs or any other thing is not going to stop a pedophile. Geeze, people. Protect your children by MONITORING THEIR INTERNET USAGE!!!

Cindy commented on Dec 05 10 at 9:59 pm

@ Jon S- I applaud you! If everyone who changed their pic did this, services for children would have a well needed boost in their funding. I think that’s amazing!

Rick G commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:01 pm

If you really want to stop child abuse go before your state reps and demand change . Get in their faces! While it’s nice to have a picture changing campaign to bring out awareness it means nothing unless you follow it up with action REPORT child abuse get involved. DEMAND Stiff …penalties for those found guilty of… child abuse and for the love all that’s decent STOP turning a blind eye and deaf ear to these children . NOW if your legislators are seeing this campaign and bringing it before Congress and Senate then good other wise this is just a passive I don’t really need to get involved approach

Selena Howard commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:03 pm

Kids should not have a facebook!!

NINA commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:03 pm

CHILDREN DON’T BELONG ON FACEBOOK!! Period. They only belong, carefully monitored, on very few sites. Facebook is not child appropriate.

Melinda commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:13 pm

Anything to bring awareness to a cause is a good thing no matter where it comes from!

Christine commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:18 pm

@Rick G: THANK U!! I KNO GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE N CLEARLY “RICKS” ARE CLEARLY GREAT MINDS!my initial argument was that this clearly is not helping the cause cause we are not donating anything to anyone, not even reporting abuse or nothing. money doesnt even go to a charity wen u change your prof pic. it is MY PERSONAL OPINION that this cartoon thing is ineffective

ricky commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:25 pm

I think the internets are bored! We all took a 3 week old meme, resurrected it and changed what the original purpose was, then created a conspiracy theory about why we were doing it and later attributed it to pedophiles, and are now fighting about it! It was a Cartoon Network event about Children’s Rights Week and now people are locking up their kids!? This is great entertainment…

Kris commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:30 pm

Why does anyone feel that only an official organization can call attention to anything???
Facebook is a “Social networking site” Keywords “SOCIAL” and NETWORKING.”
If I for example want to call attention to animal abuse for instance, I can log onto my account and post something along the lines of

“Okay people it’s Friday!!! Woot! Woot! There are alot of pets out there that are not going to have a great weekend though. Economy has got alot of people down in the dumps and some people are taking it out on their animals. This is sad and really unfortunate :( Not that everyone is beating their dogs and kicking their kitties but some are in increasing numbers these days. Other’s are simply abandoning their pets to the back yard while the owners sit inside watching their favorite television shows to escape the noise of the bill collectors calling. Leaving their pets alone, just another burden, another mouth to feed.
So here is the plan people! From to today till next Monday everyone post a photo of their favorite pet or animal as their Profile Pic until Monday morning! No people faces on facebook till then. Spread the word to your friends and let’s sees those awesome family pets! :D”

I didn’t advocate for any particular charity or animal rights group, just wrote something that might get people thinking about their pets again in a positive way and maybe some dogs and cats are going to have a great weekend too.
You don’t have to be an organization to start something like this cartoon thing we participated in this weekend. Lighten up peeps and have some fun! Oh and Happy Holidays whichever ones you celebrate :)

September Meadows commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:33 pm

In my personal opinion, if a pedophile wanted to draw attention to kids as their targets… I don’t think it would be posted all over facebook for a bunch of adults to change our profile pictures to our favorite “Childhood chartacters” if our childhood is gone and we’re old enough to look back on our childhood favorites, they really wouldn’t accomplish very much by seeing our cartoon choices. Most all of the people on my fb list are too old for the interest of a pedo. I just think there are other ways and that this would leave a pedo a lot of work to still be done, weeding thru cartoon characters pictures chosen by people old enough to remember the originals…

Michelle commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:47 pm

I honestly don’t care if it’s a hoax or not. The pedophiles would have to be complete idiots to believe it would make it easier for children accept their friend requests, because it has the complete opposite effect. I’m just doin’ it for fun.

Tri commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:49 pm

Why are kids on facebook anyway??Too me there too young if they are considered kids still to be using internet freely to have a facebook.just saying

roxy commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:51 pm

Hi..why are children on facebook or any social networking site to begin with? Why are they even given access to the internet without supervision? If people would pay better attention to what is going on with their kids, pedophiles wouldn’t have access to them to begin with.

Rebecca commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:52 pm

And, apparently, I like the phrase “to begin with” tonight.

Rebecca commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:54 pm

how dare anyone say children dont belong on face book i have two children that have facebook accounts their privacy settings are set so only friends can see their info. I monitor everything they do i sit right there with them while they are on they have family out of the state or the country serving in the military or friends they grew up with that moved far away so its an easy way to stay in contact with them maybe adults should be considerate to the chlidren and watch their language i believe sex offenders or pedophiles should not be allowed to be on facebook its a public site just like they are not allowed to live so close to schools they should not be allowed to have profiles on a public site that children would be on but to melinda i have four children who i worry about very much but it isnt rt to not let them join the technological world because some a**holes are sick minded you should just teach them the rt way to do things and if your a GOOD parent then yur kids will make the rt choices they are ppl too it would be the same as back in the 90′s telling your kids to stay off the telephone cuz the telemarketers are weirdos! wtf!

matt commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:55 pm

it may or may not be a coax but i know when i was younger that i very easily got on to sits without permission and without supervision it takes 2 minutes to go to the wrong page or persons page. whether a kid has facebook or not they can get away with looking at things and get around firewalls and all that crap too there is no way to prevent kids from pedophiles by keeping them off facebook. kids having facebook is harmless

chris commented on Dec 05 10 at 10:57 pm

For those who defend children being on Facebook, if you have a child on Facebook, you are breaking the rules Facebook as set forth. According to the terms of using the site: “You will not use Facebook if you are under 13.” … Most pedophiles aren’t going for 13-17 year olds. They are going for ‘children’ and those ages below shouldn’t be on Facebook. Period.

Of course, some ppl still send crap to their friends when they get a rogue email urging it be sent immediately to 25 friends, so suckers are everywhere. But this appears to have been harmless…

This is a rumor, if a pedophile wants to change their picture and ask a child to befriend them, they don’t need us all to do it too. And pedophiles don’t want to get our attention, they would never start a big movement. But they might start this rumor to stop us from drawing so much attention to the problems they cause! News casts all over America are featuring the fb movement and interviewing their local Child Welfare charities. It is working, that would scare a pedophile!

I’ve been encouraging all of my friends who changed their pic to show support for ending child abuse to actually donate to an organization, even if it’s only a few dollars. I donated $5 online yesterday. Good intentions are great, raising awareness is great, but actions go farther and speak louder than the best intentions. Anybody can copy and repaste a forward, hoax or no. If you care about kids, the best way to help them is to do something proactive in your community or donate to a child aid org.

Since when does an ORGANIZATION HAVE to take CREDIT for EVERY random good thing that someone does, posts, writes, etc. that has a positive message? That’s RIDICULOUS. Just because a non-profit hasn’t claimed responsibility… to suggest that it therefore means the whole thing is a hoax is ludicrous. Imagine! A REAL PERSON having a warm/charitable/lets-help-others thought of their OWN! What kind of a world would THAT be? *Note: heavy sarcasm intended*

Grow up, people, and keep your cynicism and jaded grayscale view of life to yourself, if for no other reason than to allow a little tiny bit of sunshine into a world that’s already dark enough.

I’m not sure if people are actually reading what the post is saying. It says to post a cartoon picture from your childhood. Alot of the cartoons I see are from my childhood, can we say the late 80s early 90s??? After saying that, how could this attract pedophiles if these are not current cartoons being aired today?

My commented on Dec 05 10 at 11:43 pm

Ok…first of all, children don’t belong in facebook, or any social networking sites for that matter… if there is a child that have a facebook account, then it should be the parent’s responsibility to oversee who the kid is adding and accepting as a friend, as well as who is adding him/her… this campaign may not do miracles, but you’ve got to admit that it’s fun to reminisce your childhood days…

In the Pokemon Community this month is “Change your profile picture to a pokemon month” What I think happened was that people saw Pokemon popping up and decided to make it a thing.

CVance commented on Dec 05 10 at 11:47 pm

I am a Facebooker and this is completely stupid! If a pedophile wanted your child i’m sure they wouldn’t use Facebook as it, they’d just stalk your house, right? And if you’re so worried about your child’s safety then don’t let them on Facebook. No matter where you go, pedophiles are going to be there. And plus your child should be smart enough to ignore anybody they don’t know personally. If your child is the type to add anyone, even if they don’t know them, then you need to talk to them. It’s as simple as that. No hoax or anything. I changed my profile picture and it’s still the same, stupid people these days. They suck the fun out of everything!

Jade Long commented on Dec 05 10 at 11:47 pm

Changing your pic to a cartoon character is as likely to harm children as it is to help them. In other words, not in the slightest.

Paula commented on Dec 05 10 at 11:51 pm

go to Snopes.com and type in the search “cartoon character on facebook” and it will tell you that it could not be traced to an actual Child Abuse Agency but also it mentions the later status update on facebook that it is from pedofiles however it was investigated and a trace could not be found as to who started it to begin with.
PARENTS SHOULD MONITOR ALL CHILDREN ON ANY INTERNET SITE!! DON’T PUT COMPUTERS IN THEIR ROOM. KEEP THEM IN A ROOM WHERE IF YOU WALK BY OR LOOK OVER YOU CAN SEE WHERE THEY ARE AT AND WHO THEY ARE TALKING TO. IN MY HOME ANY CHILD (MINE, FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS ETC…) THAT USES MY COMPUTER I HAVE TO HAVE THE SIGN-ON AND PASSWORD TO ALL THEIR ACCOUNTS!! AND THEY ARE TOLD BEFORE THEY GET ONLINE THAT I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO GET ON THEIR PAGES AND CHECK OUT ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. AND A FEW TIMES I HAVE FOUND EXPLICIT PHOTOS OF FRIENDS CHILDREN AND DELETED THEM AND THEN TOLD THE PARENTS. WE HAVE TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN AS WELL AS OTHERS CHILDREN!!! AND IF SOMEONE ELES CHILD IS DOING THINGS THEY SHOULDNT BE DOING ON YOUR COMPUTER IN YOU HOUSEHOLD UNDER YOUR CARE…YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT CHILD AND THERE WELL BEING!!! AS FAR AS CHANGING THE PIC TO A CARTOON CHARACTER…JUST REMEMBER…ACTIONS (ACTUALLY DONATING TO A CHARITY OR ORGANIZATION) SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS OR CARTOON CHARACTERS!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL!!

Kimberly commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:01 am

To those who say the cartoon campaign is ineffective because it doesn’t raise money: you’re trying to make the campaign out to be something it’s not meant to be. Money doesn’t solve everything either, but that’s not even the point. The point is… it’s a campaign to help raise awareness and it IS doing that. I’ve had some good discussions with people on my FB page when I changed my pic. People are paying attention. My guess is that pedophiles started the rumor about it being started by pedophiles because they don’t WANT everyone being more conscious of the issue of child abuse. To those who think a campaign of this sort should not be “fun”, I’m glad I don’t live in your house. You must be a very difficult and boring person to be around. People putting up pink ribbons on their profiles doesn’t gain money for the fight against cancer, either, but it does make people think. Halloween is considered by some to be evil, to others it’s sacred, and to some it’s a fun time for kids… and for some pedos, I’m sure it’s an opportunity. It doesn’t mean I’m going to let them win and stop celebrating it. The cartoon campaign, whether started for just fun or not, has become something more. Sorry that people have too small of minds to grasp that concept. Don’t do it if you don’t want to, but stop knocking the rest who care enough to do it.

How in any way does me changing MY profile picture help a pedophile? Maybe if we all had cartoon profile pictures, kids would NOT friend pedophiles who do… Ever think of that? And by the way KIDS under 13 are not supposed to be on FB… Keep your kids safe, know what they are doing and stop worrying about a fun FB project!

Cindy commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:07 am

So here i go first of all id like to say that i applaud everyone for being thoughtful and thinking of children as they changed their profile pictures! It was so much fun and brought back good memories for all of us. It also started some good convos. As Chris says facebook does state that a child under 13 cannot have a facebook. Therefore all parents that are putting there birthdates for kids to be on must not be to worried about pediphiles. But even saying that Id also like to say that a child knows who they know, if not by name by picture. If they were to add someone they didnt know it is not hard for them delete them after they realize they dont know the person. And like many have said if you want your child to have a facebook monitor them you know who they know as well. Facebook gives you alot of privacy settings that you can use to protect your page. It even allows you to put it so that the only way you can add a person is if they know you. That being said i really believe that this pediphile crap is a crock. Why not worry about important things rather than rumors.

Jessey commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:10 am

Aren’t most of these cartoons copyrighted? Doesn’t facebook policy require that you own the rights or attest to having the right to post pics on your facebook account? Also according to facebook policy children are supposed to be 13 years of age before they can have an account of their own. So the real question is: “are we just sheep that follow any seemingly worthy cause regardless of what laws/ rules must be broken to achieve it? Or are we really just not paying attention?”
No one should ask you to break the law in order to fulfill any objective regardless of how worthy it may seem. Think, Question, Object and Change the outcome. I’m glad ya’all had fun…I’m sure the children who endure abuse aren’t having any I hope somehow someway all the cartoon characters will rise up and actually do something about that fact.

Susan commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:20 am

I know someone on FB that volunteers at a center for abused children. In the last few days they’ve received emails and calls asking if they can volunteer or help – this is compared to a few calls a month. So it has raised some awareness. And, it was fun seeing the cartoon characters chosen by your FB friends.

Daisy commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:20 am

this is pretty silly for everyone to freak out about. yes, it is pretty nice seeing what all my friends liked as cartoon characters, so what were all going to stop just because some moron wanted to make it some big deal. If you think about it, most people who have a facebook acount are over the age of 13, well should be. we should all know better, being careful of what you post is a big thing, but its a profile picture. Most of my friends on facebook already had their profile picture as a cartoon. We all should want to support CHILD ABUSE, who wouldnt? comes to show that the person who made this a big deal about this doesnt care about it. I am still going to keep im profile as a cartoon, but not just to support CHID ABUSE (if this still goes on) but to show, im my own person, we all like different things.

Amanda commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:24 am

Ridiculous! Whether this is for a cause or not, isn’t it fun to see the cartoons that your friends remember when they were young! Forget who started it but just have fun with it.

Joe commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:27 am

Funny how people call it supporting a cause by changing your profile pic. Did any money go to an Org that actually does work to prevent child abuse?

Ben commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:27 am

Well I’ve enjoyed the cartoon weekend and walk down cartoon memory lane as part of my childhood.

Whether this FB activity was a legitimate effort to create awareness of child abuse or not, I BELIEVE IT DID.

If the only action taken was for people to pause for a moment and think about child abuse, then some action was taken albeit small, albeit indirect.

However, maybe some FB people went further. Maybe just One FB person thought further about the many forms of abuse and the depth of harm it does, the lifelong scars and the planted seed for it to potentially repeat.

Maybe, even one person took enough time to reflect on child abuse to actually report an abuser or to step in when witnessing abuse. Maybe? If that happened, wasn’t it worth it? For those that participated, did you enjoy it?Ironically or maybe even planned, the now alleged controversy to the weekend effort being a hoax actually re stimulates the awareness to the initial purpose, Child Abuse Awareness.

With that said, I don’t understand how FB users changing their profile pics to cartoons places any kid at greater risk of access from a pedophile as the recent rumor suggests. Ironically too (or planned), doesn’t this re create the awareness to a form of child abuse. The event now does not just quietly go away for the next FB call to causes.

So, I suggest if anybody reads this, saw the weekend cartoon movement and/or has heard of the counter rumor, do what the initial purpose was and what those FB participants intended and pause for a moment and think about child abuse and what you could do to mitigate it.

- JKR

Jon Rudolph commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:27 am

Changing one’s profile picture raises awareness, so that you are reminded to do more about it. Much the way seeing a religious symbol might remind one to pray or consider spiritual concerns or seeing the peace sign inspires one to choose peaceful alternatives.

Rebekah commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:28 am

It’s always annoying to read the same status copied and pasted a million times. It started off as a fun thing to do and it quickly got edited to include the child abuse message. Raising awareness is not something that is helpful in this situation. Who ISN’T already aware of child abuse?! It’s just a way for people to do nothing and fell like they’ve helped. Slacktivism. About as useful as prayer. If you want to help, donate time and/or money. Start behaving like adults, instead of being so gullible and pasting dumb hoax statuses.

Ste commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:29 am

I tend to agree if hoax or not, what if just 1 child fell for this. Yes a child is likely to be more trusting of a cartoon avatar friend request bug look at the real picture….post a character from your childhood. Now your eyes are open, which cartoons do children watch these days?????. I haven’t seem anything post late 80′s. Thank God…..

Dobbs commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:31 am

And this is what starts all the silly panic..one mention of “pedophile”. No proof whatsoever. Everyone starts spreading the news..(again no proof). It was actually a lot of fun..although most of us know cartoon characters will NOT stop child abuse. Some of us took it more as awareness…but to go through and read posts…the original was changed so many times..its like the childhood game of sitting in a circle and at the beginning whispering something..by the end it was completely different……

jod commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:36 am

Very well said Jon Randolph! If this weekend caused just one person to stop hitting their child for no reason, then it was a good thing! If it caused a parent to step in and make the call/change to protect their kids, then it worked! There is no way for us to know just how many child abusers are among us on Facebook. They wear many hats and walk many different paths in life. Most are people you meet and never would have known.

No it won’t stop child abuse but it will raise awareness so that part is a +. Some people just like to bring other people down. They have nothing better in their dreary lives than to make other people unhappy… such as hackers, etc. They go around looking for things to destroy/defame in hopes of dashing the spirits of people. How sad their lives must be.

C Logan commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:36 am

Pedophiles are very crafty in regards to how they lure children. That being said facebook is not a safe zone. I have received more friend request this week than the entire time I have been on FB! So Pedophiles have no boundaries!! SMDH

Monique commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:37 am

Look people, it wouldn’t make it easier for pedophiles to prey on children if their picture is a cartoon character. Period. In fact, it would make it much more likely that a pedophile would friend an ADULT. It was harmless fun that raised awareness to a good cause, and then someone had to go and try and mess it up THE DAY BEFORE IT STOPS. Idiots.

Mark commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:38 am

Changing your pic to a cartoon character should have no bearing on a child accepting a friend request if the parents are monitoring their childs FB page, BTW, aren’t you suppose to be at least 16 to have a page????????? As a parent we should be the ones responsible for who our children come into contact with, so, weather or not an abuser started this or not, parents need to watch their children!

Jennifer commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:38 am

I agree that even the threat of a pediphile makes me want to stop it in its tracks! I dont need a hoax or what to relive my childhood yrs, i have my kids for that! We watch cartoons etc & didnt have to change profile pic or anything! And i dont need facebook to show my support for anything. Dont get me wrong, i thought its awesome to see how many people participated! But nowadays we have to be very careful on the web & protect our babys at ANY COST! Its a shame but very real!

Longbchgrl commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:41 am

Having been a child that was abused, this type of awareness does nothing to stop the abuse, unless people are willing to step out and help in a tangible way. Awareness, I think we are all aware of abuse in any form. Let’s get out and stop it! If you see a mother cursing at her children in the mall, speak up, of course in a kind way. The child may get it worse at home. Adopt children that need help. Just some thoughts

C.F commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:42 am

Susannah, are you purposely trying to sound insane in order to be funny? Having a cartoon profile picture puts your kids at risk? How about accepting friend requests from total strangers puts kids at risk – and that’s on whoever is foolish enough to “friend” a total STRANGER. I’ve had a cartoon profile pic for days and have received ZERO friend requests, and even if I did, I’M NOT TAKING REQUESTS FROM PEOPLE I DON’T KNOW – stop blaming Facebook and the internet for your own inability to make smart decisions, there’s no cure for stupidity!

Matthew commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:44 am

FFS!! People, for real?! The original post was this trying to get adults to think back to childhood “November 15 to 20, change your profile picture to your favorite cartoon from when you were a kid and invite your friends to do the same. The goal of this game is to not see a human picture on Facebook but an invasion of childhood memories until Monday. We’re counting on you.” A week or two later someone tried to make it more interesting by claiming it had to do with supporting against child abuse and then someone with a wild imagination decided to make something nasty out of it and claim that it was pervs trying to get at the kiddies.

Get over it, post your favorite cartoon character and stop acting like such idiots over it. Someone always has to ruin some kind of fun eh?

Charlene commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:46 am

As reported by snopes, both were probably hoaxed. Child abuse is something that many ignore, and whether this was a hoax to create a chain reaction for fun, or something that was created to actually raise awareness, it did raise the awareness. That’s what’s important. Personally, I check all those virus warnings before posting them, because many are just unfounded rumors, and because quite francly, reposting a chain-status is just not my style. It seems silly. When I saw mention of this on FB, I looked it up and saw that April is Nation Child Abuse Prevention Month, but I chose to join in because it however it was originated, it was spreading awareness for a good cause. By the way, for all those panicked parents out there, would you honestly not monitor your child’s activity on the web? Honestly…????

Tarrochka commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:49 am

Riot. I was thinking the same about the schoolyard/slmber party game this turned into. A joke. Anyhoo..Yeah, it worked either way. We’re ALL talking about it. Some of us HAVE been led to donate towrds different groups than our norm this week, although April is the actual CAA month. The foold who keep at the negatives ( which are absurd and not supported) should look at how AWARE and conscious they are already this week ( and weeks to come) JUST from the post and the now arguments about child dangers. Classic. And, no, causes don’t have to require MONEY to do something constructive. One of my adult GF’s who was abused is NOW feeling more inclined from all of he hooplah to TALK about what has happened and open up about things that have been cooped for some time. Lasting benifit. No MONEY involved.. Einsteins. LOL

That’s common sense, people. I agree with some above in that I think that regardless of whether it was an actual cause to support child abuse awareness… the original *INTENT* of many of us was pure & for a good reason. You know it did get a lot of people talking and thinking about the “cause” and I am sure a few parents may of done a double check on their childrens online activity if nothing else. maybe a life was saved, who knows but what i did know is that if it was perverted in origin, it certainly backfired didn’t it. And ANY pic, like a random youth with a profile to match could be fake so it doesn’t really change the vulnerability of our kids on FB. That’s why everyone should have to be 18 I truly think.

It certainly could not do anything for an existing pedophile either. I did read an article in the Los Angeles Times, that I posted for others to read, questioning the origins of the idea to change my profile picture to support awareness of child abuse. I asked all my friends if they knew which organization was sponsoring the idea. No ONE knew. I searched for a link that had been sent to me by a friend about child abuse prevention, it was a dead link. With further research, here is the saddest thing of all: Society Against Child Abuse
3,652,555 members – $89515 donated
Type: Human Services
Geography: Global
This is a legitimate organization. It has millions of members, millions of users changed their pic, but only 89 thousand dollars have been donated to actually DO anything!!!

I can’t believe how many people think this would help a pedophile. A predator can change their photo to anything they like, anytime they want. It has nothing to do with my pick. They aren’t using mine to invite. People, open your eyes, get educated, do your own research, for something as important as protecting your children, check it out for yourself. Just doing what someone else says can be just as bad.

I am a RN in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit & I see and take care of numerous abused children, many of them die. So when myself, my coworkers, family & friends did it, I was happy to see that they cared. It made a silent statement. It also brought back good memories. SO WHAT if it wasn’t a organized group, who did it hurt? If everyone would quit over reacting & just do a little research they would know it wasn’t started by pedophiles! For the parents who say “children” should have a FB, you are in denial. My daughter is 15, and when she read the ignorant rants about pedophiles & the cartoon pics, she said that was so stupid, why would she accept a friend request from someone with a cartoon pic, she will not even accept a request from someone she does not know, or that is not a mutual friend. Btw, I have her password too. Like I said she is 15 years old, really a child less than 13 does not need a FB, and pedophiles do not need cartoon pics to get to your children. If your children are too young to know better, then they should not have a FB…duh!!

Michele commented on Dec 06 10 at 1:55 am

It started out as nothing more than a nostalgic look at the past. Three weeks before the “child abuse awareness” posts popped up, we changed our profile pictures to our favorite cartoon for no reason other than just to remember what it was like to be young. After everyone started changing back to regular pictures, then I noticed some people going back to cartoons and posting the “child abuse awareness” status updates. A week later, the pedophile baloney started showing up. It’s all for fun, people… Leave it fun!

The way I see it, whether it was a hoax or not (and let’s face it, both movements are most likely hoaxes), I like cartoons. Yeah, I support campaigns against child abuse, but the main reason I joined in was because I loved the opportunity to make Optimus Prime my profile picture. That was it, really. Not to mention the fact that seeing the different characters people put up showed at least a tiny bit of insight into who they were as a person. What more reason do you need?

Action Jaction commented on Dec 06 10 at 2:12 am

What better way for a pedo to get more kids then to pose as a child advocate? Isn’t that how they get their victims in the first place, posing as someone we can trust? If I were a young kid and saw a random add from someone with a picture of Ninja turtles, thunder cats, snoopy, or he-man, it would barley take a second to add them. It would “oh they like the same cartoon as me, i bet we’d be friends.” As an older sibling and a mother, i know how kids think. They always want to be accepted, they want friends with the same interest. Cartoons is something kid’s have in common. As a mother and a sister I have the duty to protect children from this kind of trick. Don’t we all?

Momma Friedel commented on Dec 06 10 at 2:13 am

as long as your intentions were good and it’s really all for the children then i don’t find anything wrong with the gesture. it only shows how much children are loved and protected

mel commented on Dec 06 10 at 2:17 am

Hoax or not I think everyone got something out of this.
The spot light for now is on Child Abuse awareness.
Those who posted cartoon pics probably brought back
some fond memories of your childhood.
As far as news stating this is all a hoax unless someone
comes forward and admits to it that’s not going to happen.
Do I think there’s a chance that maybe some pedophiles took advantage -definitely.
One thing I did notice while searching this topic on google I was able to pull up my nieces wall on FB even though her privacy setting is for friends only. because the heading was linked to change to cartoon character. I was able to see all of the conversations between her and her friends.
If you have children under age of 18 that might be something to check into.

Tina commented on Dec 06 10 at 2:32 am

Hoax or not, in my time on FB I’ve never seen this big a response to anything. That just shows you that people are at least aware of the issue and willing to stand up in support of kids who are victims of violence and abuse. And honestly, it was quite fun seeing cartoons for a change.

Berenike commented on Dec 06 10 at 3:27 am

it dont matter if facebook was for adults if a child wants something and normally they do they are gonna lie about their ages anyhow and there is not a way for a website to stop it unless they require id and what moron is gonna post id on the net for frauds thats like giving your banking account or credit card account away. to the person that said that you failed as a parent cuz your child was taken by a molester your a sick person i would never say that to anybody we as parents try our hardest to protect our kids and im sure there are adults on here that was a victim and you must not have any children to know how kids these days sneek and lie and its not just kids that sneek and lie its adults also.So lets stop playing the blame game and enjoy what we did for a dew days

sharon commented on Dec 06 10 at 4:32 am

I am gonna play devils advocate for a second. What this “campaign” did was make us all (maybe) think about child abuse for a second…and remember that my own childhood..while less than idyllic could have been worse.

It didn’t ask for a dona…tion, so in my opinion if it was just thought up by some schmuck in East Overshoe, Kansas…so much the better…bully for him or her. (It didn’t require an organization because it didn’t ask for money)Cause awareness was raised, perhaps infinitesimally and in a very superficial fashion…but isn’t facebook with its 180 character limit DESIGNED for the superficial.

As far as the pedophile argument….Some people see pedophiles everywhere children are mentioned outside of mom’s recipe sites, where everyone talks about how cute their kids are…and their dh (devoted husband) and the superiority of their banana pudding recipes.

I think it was a nice idea and it worked….and when we make it sinister we sort of let the bad guys (and gals) win.

To all of you who actually took time to do more than just change your pic – maybe you donated $$, maybe you donated time, maybe you decided not to turn a blind eye next time you suspect a child may be being abused (like so many do) but to report it instead – thank you. You truly have made a difference in a child’s life.

LinHi commented on Dec 06 10 at 4:48 am

GRITS commented on Dec 06 10 at 4:49 am

If my six year old or my 18 year old ISN”T on facebook, how is a pedophile suppose to talk to them?? Besides that, who would have their kids on Facebook that are ‘intrigued’ by the cartoon posted? That would have to be a young kid- under the age of 10. Most FB users that are children are teens and most socialize with each other.

corina b. commented on Dec 06 10 at 4:52 am

You’re trying to tell me: a “group” of pedifiles banned together (as if they are a club like the KKK) and within this formation… this club – it has a leader, and said leader of said pedifile group stood up and stated one day at their round table meeting, “Hey I have an idea! Lets have Facebook collectively change their profile pictures to cartoons so that on the outside chance that everyone out there on Facebook is indeed 12 year old and not 30 something or older, we can spend some time talking to them and convincing them on line, regardless of city state or zip, that we are indeed good people so that we therefore can have our sexual way with them!”
Hell yeah that happened!
THINK PEOPLE. Please. Stop. Believing. Media. . . Amen.

E.M.H commented on Dec 06 10 at 5:57 am

Trina commented on Dec 06 10 at 6:16 am

Really, people unless you actually get off facebook and out into the world to donate your own time and money, changning your FB pic does NOTHING to help anyone. It is just a big wank. It is ridiculous that anyone actually believes they have done anything to stop violence against children by doing this. That’s why I object to it. Do something real and stop patting yourselves on the back for your imaginary heroics.

Christine commented on Dec 06 10 at 6:25 am

As you can see, I changed my profile. How can anyone say that this campaign was actually a “hoax?” So many took the time to copy and paste the campaign on their wall, actually taking the time out to think about the violence against children, and many may or will take it a step further! Do those of you who are against this “game” not concerned for others? Facebook is such a powerful tool! So many are now talking about this issue now, so in my opinion, it got people thinking, and it worked!

Holly commented on Dec 06 10 at 6:25 am

I dont know if this is a hoax or not, but yes, in my opinion, it was a good cause. Children need voices and need to know that people care, whether or not donations are involved. Just to even raise awareness is reason enough. I have 2 children ages 9 and 10, and no way in hell would I even let them have a facebook account. They are too young, and should be focused on family and schoolwork, not sitting in front of the computer on facebook. I know some of their friends are, but I do not agree with it at all. Kids should not be using fb as a tool to socialize with their friends or for the gaming purposes. They can see their friends at school, or better yet, use the actual phone. As for the gaming end, there is such a thing as gaming consoles.

vicki commented on Dec 06 10 at 7:03 am

D’oh! Why do I keep falling for this stuff? I think what’s worse are those letters promising money in exchange for helping someone with something that is not our job to do. Those are the hoaxes we should be looking out for.

Tanya Kasim commented on Dec 06 10 at 7:05 am

Why does anyone need to ‘prove’ that it was a “HOAX”. Even if a child abuse prevention group started it or just an individual saying they want to make people more aware of child abuse, it’s still a ’cause’ and where is the rule written that some official “group” need to lay claim to starting it? Who cares? Debbie is right! The American public needs to stop analyzing everything to DEATH!!!! Leave it alone!

Susie Q commented on Dec 06 10 at 7:12 am

BILL JOHNSON commented on Dec 06 10 at 7:18 am

If your kids are accepting someone because they have a cartoon pic as their profile, then you need to re-evaluate your kids’ friends… why are they accepting someone as a friend that they don’t know?

Kelly commented on Dec 06 10 at 7:40 am

Whether this was a HOAX or not, all it shows is how gullible people are, and how easily they are swayed to do anything! Someone posts something on their facebook status and everyone else just aimlessly follows along, posting it on theirs, without even checking it out to see if it is legit! No wonder we have such moronic politicians in office! Like so many others have said, what good did it do for all those poor abused children? No one donated any money or took any of these children into their homes to get them away from the abuse. I’m sure it was fun to post the cartoon pics and remember them from your past, but you don’t have to make a social issue out of it and get all melodramatic!

Nancy commented on Dec 06 10 at 7:50 am

I like cartoons and having fun, but I couldn’t quite bring myself to participate because it almost seemed like it was trivializing the subject. “Let’s have fun and think about poor abused children at the same time!”
It seems it’d be much more to the point to post a picture of Zahra Baker or another such child with a status of “Pray for an end to child abuse,” or “Help abused children; become a foster parent.”

Tara commented on Dec 06 10 at 8:45 am

It’s too bad there are children who would befriend someone on FB just because they had a cartoon character as their profile picture. Maybe the cause should be to raise awareness for children and adults on only accepting friends you know!!

Sheila commented on Dec 06 10 at 9:20 am

A very sick & twisted thing to do!
Cartoons was a gateway for kids to for kids to escape into a fantasy to imagine or dream…funny as well. To take away the innocence of a child to make what is good into
some sick fantasy to pleasure them- selves makes me sick to my stomach!I’d like to send all those pedophiles out into the wild where the lions, panthers, leopards, wolves would eat them alive! Then maybe they would realize the damage that they’ve done to an innocent child! Another option is an old-school beat-down aka kicking ass & humiliating you along the way!! People monitor your children no matter what! See what they’re doing…especially on the internet! Peace!

Kim commented on Dec 06 10 at 9:23 am

Something everyone is forgetting….if everyone followed the rules of FB, no one under the age of 13 would have a page to begin with (even though we all know many do) So again, isn’t it more important to be watching what your kids do while online and not being so caught up with your own things….I personally have all my kids(5) passwords and monitor theit sites reagularily and I still found time to enjoy a little “reminising” with the cartoon stuff…so let’s all be better parents and remember to still have some fun with life!! Like someone said on this site, aren’t there more important things to worry about?

Sheila commented on Dec 06 10 at 9:31 am

I changed my picture purely as a statement in saying I don’t like child abuse in any form! I don’t care if it was started by a charitable organization or just by one person who also does not tolerate child abuse, it was simply an exercise in making a statement! If you believe it was started by paedophiles, well here’s some other shocking news for you, the why colour is your bra campaign was started by a bunch of dirty old men who, well just wanted to
Know what colour your bra is! :0P

Oz-Zee commented on Dec 06 10 at 9:34 am

I don’t see how changing every picture on facebkook to a cartoon would help a pedophile. It just makes it so everyone looks like a kid. I was thinking of using an animate character but went with a classic that any kid of any age could use. The pictures would make it harder on a pedophile to find kids in the mob of facebook.

william commented on Dec 06 10 at 9:51 am

I look at my precious grandson and it makes me so sick and disgusted to know that there are people out there who look at him as a sex object. He is only 3 yrs old. I can tell you all this I will personally string anyone up who would hurt an innocent child in that way and castrate them without anethesia or whatever is necessary to stop them, then I would like to place all the perverts in one prison all together and let them prey on each other. The rights of a child are more important then any right of an adult whether or not they are perverted or normal. Children can’t help themselves, so we normal people have to help them. Don’t kill the perverted just put them all together so they can see how it feels. God help all those children already hurt and those to come.

debbie commented on Dec 06 10 at 10:28 am

I changed my picture even though I know that it won’t stop child abuse anything that will raise awareness should be put into action. My nephew was severely abused by “Shaken Baby Syndrom” from a caretaker while his mother was at work, she thought she knew this person he was an ex-boyfriend and still a friend to her and she just thought he was trying to help her out by watching him. He ended up in Children’s Hospital with less than fifty percent chance of living. With a lot of miracles from God he did survive but is severely handicapped. He has slowly shown little improvements day by day but we are happy for anything. He was three years old when this happened and in August he turned four. I think that this awareness being televised is great! You really need to know what could happen, even if you think you know this person you are leaving your children with!!

Kimberly commented on Dec 06 10 at 10:31 am

Didn’t you just write an article about it? See, awareness raised.

Kate commented on Dec 06 10 at 10:36 am

We changed our profile picture for what we believed was a good cause because that’s what we were told. It’s just like we vote a president into office because of what he tells us…and then we see the truth behind it all after the fact. Believe as you may, but we spread the message that was told to us. If your child would become a prey…SHAME on you for not monitoring your childs web sessions. I have a young child and you bet I will know all that’s going on. I know what I liked to do when I was a kid!!! So thats the problem there. You can never forget your childhood or you won’t realize and notice how much more you can connect with your son or daughter. Are these the pedophiles trying to make sure that little kids put their pictures back up so then they will be able to see their young faces again because they had a dry weekend? Exactly…believe the first message and awareness will be raised.

Mando commented on Dec 06 10 at 10:47 am

Why do we villainise such innocent things? If everyone looks at it in a positvie light, that it is raising awareness, then it’s good.
No matter who started it, I beleive it is doing some good. Shedding light on child abuse. And I beleive it is more directed at the abuse children endure in their own homes. Many kids suffer everyday at the hands of their siblings, parents, caretakers.
And in regards to ” a pedophiles group that is doing this because its easier to get accepted friend requests!”… EDUCATE YOUR CHILDREN. Do not ecept invitations or friendships from ANYONE THEY DON’T KNOW!!!

David commented on Dec 06 10 at 10:51 am

All of these “change your pic/profile to fight x,y and z” FB things are stupid. How exactly does changing your pic do anything about child abuse? It doesn’t. People just like the false sense of importance it gives them to LOOK like they are doing something to stop child abuse. No more slacktivism, let’s have some actual activism.

Ruth commented on Dec 06 10 at 10:54 am

You know, I was abused as a child. I don’t think changing your FB photo is going to change what happens to children and Adults. I mean physical change. It’s not going to change the minds of the abusers… seriously.I agree w/ David.

Candace commented on Dec 06 10 at 11:12 am

Please, it was all innocent fun. I never once saw a post saying it was for child abuse prevention and I had many friends posting to change it to a cartoon character.

I changed mine out of nostalgia, not because anyone was telling me it was for a cause. As a parent I don’t believe for a second this will allow pediphiles easier access to kids. That part is just a lot of bull, probably started by someone annoyed by all the cartoon characters or status updates. Anyone who believes it was started by pedophiles may want to check out my real estate posting as well. I have some great Ocean front property in Arizona that I am selling cheap! For those of you who say “better safe than sorry” or crap like that, I still have to roll my eyes at you. If a pedophile wants to try and access a kid he/she will, A chartoon character in the profile will not change that or make it easier. Also the parents are idiots for not monitoring thier childs internet time.

Fredfredburger commented on Dec 06 10 at 11:21 am

I don’t know about anyone else, but adding a friend is not something that should be done based on a profile pic. Kids aren’t supposed to be in FB and I know LOTS are, so it’s up to the parents to monitor their friend selections and teach internet safety. Hopefully this hoax will encourage that.

Judy Muskauski commented on Dec 06 10 at 11:26 am

I enjoyed seeing who my friends chose as their cartoon avatar, it was interesting to see some of the creative and lovable choices. If people changed their pic intending to support a good cause, that’s good enough for me. After all, now we are all talking about child abuse and pedophilia, which is another step to awareness and protection. If it was a “sinister plot” it back-fired!

Sharona commented on Dec 06 10 at 11:32 am

Who cares if this is a hoax or not? It still raised awareness which was the plan for the original campaign so who cares where it originated?

Nat commented on Dec 06 10 at 11:59 am

I wish people could spell pedophile correctly! I agree with others that if nothing else it was a bit of fun to see who liked what when they were little, its totally irrational to think that someone can ‘become’ your ‘friend’ more easily because you have a cartoon pic. My children are very aware of the dangers of the net and are not allowed to add any adults or anyone else they do not personally know (I check in everyday to see what they are doing. This is a condition of them using the computer, they dont mind anyway). The fact that many are willing to show support for a cause or start a social movement is a good thing, whether the cause is real or not, after all this is cyberspace, world wide, how would one be able to trace which org. started it anyway, its pretty irrelevant in my eyes.

newto commented on Dec 06 10 at 12:05 pm

Perhaps pedophiles may get another message from all of this, that those cartoons represent people who support the wellbeing of CHILDREN! Regardless of the “fun” of this project,I believe most of us participated because of our sincere belief in children’s rights as a noble and critical cause.

It raised silent awareness! & maybe made some people thinkI Many of my coworkers, family & friends did not care WHO the hell started it. I have been a Pediatric Intensive Care RN for 20 years now. I have put numerous little bodies in body bags after they have been beaten senseless by mostly their mothers BF’s, fathers, sometimes their own mothers. It takes a little piece of me every time. We are helpless, because it is up to our liberal courts to deal with the offenders. So get of your high horse and until you walk in someone’s shoes who deals with it day in and day out. Don’t judge what we do in remembrance to this awful sickness we have in our society!!!! Because trust me if I could stop it I would, it breaks my heart to see this all the time.

PhoenixRising commented on Dec 06 10 at 1:48 pm

Now we need to spend the same amount of energy and passion on the real topic CHILD ABUSE rather than if the campaign was legit or not. So where do we begin? Angela B commented on Dec 06 10 at 5:12 pm

Putting our profile pics as cartoons doesn’t help the pedophiles. Our pictures don’t do anything for them. All it does is allow people to have fun and remember the good times.

Heather commented on Dec 06 10 at 5:17 pm

If a cartoon pic helps a pedophile get underage FB friends he or she is going to do it. Having thousands of other people doing it shouldn’t make any difference. They can already post pictures that make it seem like they are 10 years old. By the same token, changing a photo to a cartoon isn’t going to help conquer violence against children. So let’s get real here. This was fun. Period.

Casey commented on Dec 06 10 at 5:34 pm

I don’t accept friends I don’t know unless they have been forwarded by one of my already friends. I got it from a “good” source that it was a “hoax”. They said it had been on TV and in the news. Pointless but fun, really. And the pedophile angle: look, kids aren’t stupid. They won’t make friends with a “cartoon character” that isn’t a fan site. If changing your icon on FaceBook brought awareness to the prevention of child abuse, then it worked. It made people aware and come together and work as a united group. Those who wish to bash it, that’s your problem. I support that which unifies, rather than divides. If something so simple as posting a cartoon character can bring awareness to something so horrible and if it prevents even ONE child abuse occurrence, then it was worth it.

I too thought it was a bit weird to post a cartoon to help child abuse, I mean how could it help? But theni thought, but wearing a pink ribbon doesnt actually help cure cancer but it does raise awareness. It’s the same with poppies on remembrance day (Canada). They don’t save soldiers lives, but they do make you think about soldiers who have died. I have to admit I have been thinking more about abused children since I changed my facebook pic and at the same timeit was a lot of fun to see which friends put up which cartoon. It was just a lot of fun and even if it wasn’t an ” official” campain, I think it has been successful in raising awareness.

The posts never claimed to be a part of any non-profit organization. They only said to post to boost awareness. Obviously it worked, or forums like this wouldn’t be discussing it. To me a hoax means that there was something misleading about the post. Read it for what it is, it made no claims. Now the counter post on the other hand does make some accusations. I’ve searched all of legitimate news sources and can find nothing supporting the claim that it was a news item.

OK…seriously… How does ME having a cartoon character as MY profile picture open the door for pedophiles?? I’M NOT A PEDOPHILE AND I’M NOT THE ONE INVITING KIDS TO BE FRIENDS. If you are a parent and concerned that your kid is accepting friends they shouldn’t, that’s your fault for letting your child use facebook when they’re apparently too young to make such decisions without your immediate supervision, just sayin’. I’ve seen people posting pictures of their kids on facebook and don’t have their pages and info blocked. That’s a real concern I would have…security of my own information.
I agree 100% that changing the profile picture did help awareness AND it was fun to take that trip down memory lane!! Thank you to whoever did start that campaign

How would changing my profile picture help someone else befriend anyone? Think, people!!!

I truly enjoyed seeing all the different cartoons that went up, it brought back so many memories. I hope this was not a hoax and even if it was I had a ball with it.

Well, I saw a couple things that said it was about kids, but most of them were funny. I didn’t put it up for awareness, I put it up because it was fun to see what was important to people when they were kids. And you know what, if it did spread any sort of awareness at all about child abuse, then who are we to tear that down? Idiots, that’s who.

Harmless fun as I see it. It was interesting and entertaining to see what characters other friends were updating their profile pic to – brought back lots of memories.

Good or Bad…. if everyone makes it a habit not to reply to Profiles without Photos….it will kill the evil designs of whoever.

Leo DSouza commented on Dec 07 10 at 1:29 pm

If everyone avoid replies to Cartoon Character Profiles…..it will defeat the evil intentions of the evil designer!!

Yano i spent all this time reading who did what …who is for and and who agrees and who doesnt…and the bottom line is …i see people getting upset with others who CHANGED their pictures and how they are helping pedophiles. How about putting the anger and the upset where it really should be put?? How bout asking Facebook WHY THE HELL ARE THEY EVEN ALLOWING a Known Legal Pedophile Org. to have a membership ON facebook??? Do they really consider them humanly equal to everyone else and feel they have a RIGHT to be on with all the children on Facebook. I for one as a child abuse SURVIVOR was not AWARE that they that they were actually considered to be HUMAN…. So how bout if we focus on the right thing here and not beat each other to death over a little cartoon character and who said what or who started or will or wont take claim on this whole thing. It raised awareness…thats the bottom line. The ending was justified according to me.

I don’t see any reason why a person under the age of 13 should even be on a computer, tell them to go outside and play. Geez.

Deb Fournier commented on Dec 07 10 at 9:10 pm

yes i agree Parents should keep under age children off facebook. I also was under the impression that pedophiles were not able to have a Facebook or am i miss informed. I know i heard something about fb putting up some kind of protection for the not so smart Pre-teens who dont listen to their parents.

rodrigodragon commented on Dec 08 10 at 4:27 am

As I read some of these, I must make parents understand! If I post a Casper the frendly ghost pic, or wonder dog pic, it tells people that I am over 50. But if I post a current cartoon pic it tells people I am under 16. Parents just need to be VIGILANT on the internet usage of there children.
